The Role
I very much enjoyed my placement at Hays Recruitment. Unlike a lot of 12 month placements in industry, you are considered a valuable member of the team, and from day one you will be performing the role of a recruitment consultant. The skills that this placement have installed in me, have been invaluable, and can be taken and put into practice in every walk of life.
Placement year students within Hays, are seen and treated as a full time member of staff. Because, you are directly aiding a member of the team or working on your own desk, your input will aid your manager/team in making sales. Your Colleagues will invest time in training you, so that you can add further value. The training program starts at the beginning of your internship (first 3 months), and carries on a day to day bases through your placement, till you finish.
I was supported by my manager on a daily bases.
Extremely busy. From 08:30 till 18:00 you will be constantly busy either on the phone to candidates, talking through potential roles or arranging interviews/ talking through offers, to speaking to clients. Not every day is the same, and you will soon learn the tasks of multitasking, working to deadlines, and working in pressured situation
I was given a lot of responsibility. Every desk is different, and your managers set different goals for your internship. My specific role was to identify a certain area in the market, that previously my desk had not have much experience in. My role was to build my candidate pool and fill as many roles within this area as I could. This responsibility that was given to me, gave me an extra objective to complete, on top of my day to day tasks.
The purpose of this internship for me, was to give me the skills and insight into the business world. Currently studying a History degree, this placement has given me a first hand insight into the world of business. Skills that I have developed are, people skills, how to work efficiently, and conducting business with anyone from analysts to directors.
The Company
Good atmosphere. A lot of noise as every one for the majority of the time are on the phone, there is a real buzz. There are also national sales day once or twice a week, which means each department competes against each other (who makes the most calls, books the most meetings). This brings out the competitive edge in everyone
Very organized, you are put on a training program
Very organized. Given a 4 week crash course training program with a director. Followed by training provided daily, to give you the skills to be a good recruiter, but also bring you up to speed with what is happening in the market, so that you can add value to your candidates recruitment process.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Appealing if you want a career in recruitment, as Hays is one of the largest recruitment firms, with opportunity to work on your own desk and build your own business. There is also an opportunity to work in an office in a different country, that could be of an appeal. To work for a firm that has the brand, could help you in achieving your goals
The Culture
You do tend to stick to your team or team members on your floor, rather than socializing with all Hays employees. You do see other employees after work at the pub across the road. Perhaps more social events could be arranged and put into the calendar to increase socailising with all Hays employees.
London is an expensive place to live and work. On the salary that is offered, you do have to budget and you do have to juggle socializing and living costs
Majority of people in the city go to pubs
Not many
