The Role
My placement was really good! I got involved in lots of things that weren't related to my role and finished the year by meeting the CEO of IBM!
I worked in the management team for Early Professionals and the managers really valued all the work I did for them.
Every Early Professional is given an Early Professional Manager who will support you throughout your placement and review your performance during the year. You'll also work with your task manager and team who will support you in your day to day tasks.
At the beginning of my placement I was extremely busy, however by the end of the year I was a lot quieter because I was able to do all my tasks much quicker.
I was given loads of responsibility. My role included on-boarding and inducting all apprentices and organising apprentice and graduate education. My managers left me to get on with my work and were there for support if I needed it.
The skills you learn on a placement year are invaluable and I would fully recommend a placement at IBM to anyone thinking of applying.
The Company
I was lucky that I worked in a team made up of other Early Professionals and a large team of managers. The office was always friendly and welcoming even during the busy periods of the year.
The placement scheme has been running at IBM for many years and therefore has an established structure. The main structure is: a two day induction, 3 month review, 6 month review, careers event, 12 month review.
There is plenty of education to be getting on with in IBM if your role becomes quiet. Although interns don't get education with a cost there is a lot of free education available.

You are able to apply to the graduate scheme internally which gives you an advantage over external applicants.
The Culture
I was based in Hursley (Hampshire) and there were around 70 interns plus around 40 other Early Professionals. There were always things going on that you could get involved in.
My rent was £400 plus roughly £50 for bills. This was average for the area although some people did pay quite a lot more. The social cost was pretty much average for the location.
There are plenty of bars in the local towns and cities, and with the nearby universities the weekends certainly weren't quiet.
We have an IBM club that you can join and they give you the opportunities to do many activities and trips outside of work.
