The Role
I enjoyed my placement year as it let me experience different business areas and liaise with different teams. As a consequence I obtained a breadth of knowledge but moreover got a feel for what I liked doing and disliked doing. I also got the chance to travel to different IBM locations and see the different business cultures.
From the beginning of my placement year I was welcomed by my immediate team and others who I encountered. I was treated as an equal and feel I developed good business relationships with my Manager and team. I always felt able to ask questions if I needed to and was frequently asked to help out on extra tasks.
There was a 'happy' medium during my time on placement. I was trusted to complete tasks independently but knew there was help available if I needed it. All I had to do was ask for a phone call or a quick meet.
On a daily basis I had enough work to complete. Like any job there are busier days and quieter days but on the whole I was happy with my work load. Having a balanced role means there is opportunity and time to get involved in projects outside of your role - this gives you more insight into the business and allows you to network.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility but just like the busy and quiet times it comes in waves. Personally, I think this is the best way so you can be prepared for responsibility and are experienced with it but are not stressed that the responsibility is constant.
My placement year has taught me a lot about business but also highlighted my strengths and weaknesses. I feel this is really beneficial as I now have a clearer view of what I need to work on. As well, time management skills and routine are factors that will definitely aid me in my final year of study.
The Company
I was based in South Bank so there was always a buzz in the office. It was one of the biggest IBM locations in the country so was always busy - this is definitely a motivating factor.
I think the placement was set very well. There were never any mistakes with admin and we had very clear review points. For example, 3 month review, 6 month review and Final Review. We were constantly updated with things we needed to know via email. Also the induction days were explanatory and eased you into the start of placement.
At IBM there is alot of opportunity to do things outside of your role including extra online training courses. Other employers are always keen to help you better yourself.
Flexi Time
Working from home
Although the application process can be quite tricky there are job opportunities.
The Culture
Being based in South Bank, London meant there was a huge social scene. I think South Bank had the most interns across the country.
I lived at home and commuted in so it was cheaper for me in that respect. However, drinks in London can be quite pricey - you just need to seek out the right spots.
Yes there were lots.
