The Role
Working at GE has been one of the best experiences in my life! I have been given room to develop my skills in a cutting edge world leading business environment. I could not ask for a better step-up into the digital industry, and to think how great working for GE will look on my CV!
During my time at GE i worked with some absolute characters, each approachable, friendly and willing to give feedback when asked. Knowing that the people on your team rely on you to help them, and in turn you can rely on them for support when you need it, is a great feeling!
Bi-Weekly catch up sessions with my mentor enabled me to formulate a plan of how i could tailor my internship to best suit my needs. Encouraged to network and complete online courses (MOOCs) to expand our knowledge. Quarterly review meetings with my manager and HR laid out plans for my professional development at GE (PD@GE).
Kept busy enough that i had to learn to balance the amount of time i spent on my different projects.
At the beginning of my placement I was given shared tasks working in a small team so that we could support each other. As time progressed more of my work became solo projects. Towards the end of my internship my responsibilities greatly increased just as my skill-base did. I have been approached to be the point of contact between GE and our Customer.
Many of the skills i learned and enhanced while on this placement will be carried into the rest of my degree studies. My confidence in my own knowledge and skills has greatly increased, leaving me with a much more positive outlook for my future studies! Bring on the final year of my degree!
The Company
The office I worked in was open plan, and the atmosphere within reflected that well. People would make time to answer your questions, or let you know if they were too busy. You look forward to going into work in the morning, always greeted by people as you walk in and same again as people leave in the evening.
My internship placement started out with the best intentions of keeping a regulated structure, but as is the world of projects things don’t always go according to plan.
2 weeks of full time training at the beginning as a crash course on what our business did, our product base and some technical programming. As well throughout the year we the interns were mentored and provided opportunity to work on projects that would develop our skills outside of our normal role.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with GE, and having worked in the projects and services team for nearly a year I can say with some certainty that this is the kind of workplace I thrive in. A blend of technical and customer facing activity is the perfect fit, and I will be keenly looking for job opportunities back with GE.
The Culture
Already leading a busy social scene the majority of my interactions with other interns was internally at work. That didn't stop us having a laugh at lunch though.
Cambridge is a very expensive area to live in, and despite also being a university city, prices of living and socialising in the area can be staggeringly high. However being a university city is also fantastic, as the area is filled with young bright minds , with many clubs and activity groups also taking in non city students. There is always some non-costly activity going on somewhere.
I am not much of a nightlife explorer, so cannot offer much on this topic. However from what i have heard from colleagues Cambridge has some fantastic clubs and pubs.
Loads, be they University societies, pub crawls, Guest lecutures, or sporty activity, there is always something to do in Cambridge. Cambridge is a city with a rich history, and many fine traditions. One of the outings the interns from work undertook was to go Punting along the river Cam, to see all the colleges from the waterside.
