The Role
I enjoyed the responsiblity and pressure of my role within IBM. I knew what I was doing directly effected the business and that made my day to day tasks have meaning and feel worthwhile. Also an interesting insight into a large global company
I felt valued by my colleagues from the start as I was placed within a very good team of people. They had support for me as well as guidance throughout my one year placement at IBM
I was given some support but not always. My manaer is a very good manager for getting results but is not easily approachable for guidance - to some extent having little support helps you learn quicker - so not necessarily a negative
This varied as I was with a sales based organization we were driven mainly by quarters - at quarter end I was incredibly busy but towards the middle or start of a quarter I was not completely snowed under.
I was given a lot of responsibility whilst on placement - My roles were business critical and sale relied on my support. Without me being their to support the team they would have had to pay for a full time member.
I don't think any will. Academia helps me understand and contextualize things in a deep sense - this is not needed in the practical reality of business, although does prepare you with a base level of general intelligence
The Company
There is a lot of flexible working at IBM so a lot of people are into in the office very regularly. However those who are create a community feel. Everyone is freidnly and gets a long even throughout the competing business lines
It is well organised. You are presented with a 2 day induction to familiarize yourself with IBM as a whole. Your then placed into your role and have several weeks of handover and training. You are also given a manager alongside your task manager who looks after your welfare etc.
A lot. There were training days and many online tests that we had to complete. Quaterly education days where the latest technologies were discussed. I think more can still be invested however due to cuts in spending this is unlikley to improve in the future.
They are appealing in terms of salary! Some graduate roles are offered at 35k which is good for a graduate. However it is rather discouraging that you have to re-apply despite having a years experience and knowledge at the company,
The Culture
Yes there were 20 students in the area tha I was living in - which made for great socialising. Although many tended to live at home and commute in rather than live in accommodation - making the night life slightly dull.
Cost of living was low in comparison to london but high in compariosn to Manchester where I am from. For example a hair cut in the town was staying was 16 pounds - whereas in my town it is 8. The night life was what you make of it - good and also bad at the same time! I think people can understand that!
It was good - there are many bars and pubs in the area to drink and socialise in. Club wise there are 3/4 relatively sized clubs they each offer something different although I was not particularly impressed with any. Night life is what you make of it - it is not about the place its about who your with.
Yes I joined a local semi professional football team. I played for Warwick for a year which allowed me to meet new people etc. I am not sure what opportunties there would be if you didnt like sport however.
