The Role
The work placement was thoroughly enjoyable. The people you work with can greatly effect your experience in a role and I can say say that the majority of the people I worked with at IBM were friendly and made me feel comfortable.
There were tasks that only I had the knowledge to complete so I felt quite valued. Unfortunately being part of a sales team meant we hardly saw each other and had little contact.
When ever I needed guidance or support it was given to me promptly and well. I personally like being provided with feedback so I can understand how I'm getting on, but this was rarely provided
For the first few months I was quite busy learning the ropes and mastering my daily duties. For a short period, when I had mastered the basics, I found myself with a lot of free time. I had to speak up to ensure I was given more work and my time was being used effectively.
The level of responsibility was quite low, but I was responsible nonetheless. If I didn't carry out my tasks, the team as a whole could not perform.
The skills I developed during my work placement will definitely help me in the future, assisting with my degree and future work.
The Company
Around my work space the atmosphere was good. It wasn't all work, we would sit down and get our duties done but there was still general conversation with each other. Everyone is very friendly and there were a lot of other interns so you would always see friends around the office.
The programe ran very smoothly and well. There could have been room for improvement to ensure that interns time was being used effectively
There is a lot of personal development opportunities it. It is compulsory to complete 40 hours of education per yer. On top of this there are always events IBM-ers can sign up to for training and development
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
There is not much variety for graduate job positions.
The Culture
Our team (and most teams) have quarterly meetings followed by a social. On top of this there were occasions when the team would organise to meet up after work. There is a large number interns which is very good and there are usually weekly social events that everyone is welcome to attend.
Living in London means there is a high living cost and I thought the increase in pay compared to other IBM locations did not balance that out.
Central London is amazing for social life and night life. There is something for everybody, and it is easy to travel around on foot or by using public transport.
Yes, there are plenty of opportunities if you seek them. Work wise and socially.
