The Role
It was great having a placement in GSK. There are many opportunities for the placement students in this company. They host many events and there are communities to join especially for the placement people. This gives them special attention and open varied doors to gain experience. I felt lucky to be placed in great company with fantastic people around me.
I personally feel not many people get a chance to work with a team that I had. Extremely great people and they make sure you feel comfortable in whatever you do. There is always room for transparency. I never hesitated to make a comment about the projects that I do even if it's something that I'm not really interested.
As a placement student they don't expect you to excel in all the things that you do but show you the ways where you can explore yourself. You are not limited with a single work but given tasks of different types which helped me to understand my skills and enhance them better.
This depends based on the projects you work. When I joined I wasn't given much work which helped me to settle myself well. Then there was a time when I talked with my supervisor about handling many projects at a time. When they all got over I was again free with only one project. So my workload is more or less balanced.
In the early stages of my placement I was very nervous and my manager supervised all the meetings I facilitate. As the time goes when I knew how to handle these I was given responsibilities individually and I too expressed my views on taking up them. So I believe when prove or show them your capability you'll be given responsibilities for your level.
Coming from a programming background I took up this Business Analyst role quite hesitantly. But I'm really happy with the way that my Placement went. More than technical skills I've gained business professional skills. I have also scratched some ideas for my final year projects by getting inspired with few things around here.
The Company
A large company with own space for every employee. Too many people around you yet so relaxed environment. There is a large canteen which can accommodate all of the people in the company and a lovely café. You can relax yourself in between your works in a lounge. There is everything you need inside the office itself.
It is extremely well organised. As they intake a large group of placement students every year they are perfect in everything they do. The placement group is managed separately, so you are not unnoticed. There is always someone to take care of you and discuss about your needs and worries.
There are many online training courses within the company. Some are available for free and some needs to be paid. I attended an Excel advanced training for which my cost centre paid nearly £200. They are ready to invest but you should also have a reason to attend those sessions because nothing is taken for granted.

All placement students can apply for Graduate jobs. But still you are compared with external applicants too. I cannot state that placement students will be given more precedence in the graduate scheme as the weightage will be compared the same throughout all applicants. But statistically last year more graduate jobs are offered to placement students:)
The Culture
I'm not a socially outgoing person but my colleagues always given me the space to enjoy myself as I am. They are well approachable personalities and I even improved my networking skills after I joined GSK. We go for lunches outside and do birthday parties at office. There are also night outs and dinner parties.
I cannot answer this question as I come directly from my home. But as this looks like a working area I suppose it would not be much cheaper around. I'm based in GSK House which is the headquarters located in Brentford near Hounslow I don't expect it to be cheaper.
We plan for night parties occasionally. You can also arrange one by inviting all your colleagues to the dinner parties. Industrial Placement students do arrange get together by themselves. We also go to social clubs like Top Golf. So I don't think there is a need to worry about socialising.
Yes there are more opportunities to engage in social events. We take part in charity donating funds frequently. There are celebrations hosted for Diwali, holi, Christmas and so on. Loads of volunteering opportunities to take part in. There will always be something coming up whenever you think it's getting bored.
