The Role
My placement was an invaluable insight into life after university in the corporate world. To a large extent it has been the year I have learned the most about both myself and how global businesses work on a day to day basis.
I was extremely fortunate to work closely with my Task managers and Mentors on a day to day basis. As the placement progresses you feel more valued by all your colleagues and this is exemplified by the fact you produce more valuable deliverables as time goes on. The time my colleagues invested in my development is invaluable to my career development.
I was fortunate to work with managers on a day to day agile way, so I was given an amazing amount of support throughout my year. There are times where you need to tackle tasks on your own, for your own personal development but management are consistently on hand to support in any way needed.
It fluctuated. I think mainly due to the nature of the consulting industry. No week was like the previous and I really enjoyed this adhoc approach. As deadlines approach you can be pretty full on, however it's also nice to have some down time to focus on some giveback at times.
From day 1 I was treated like a regular employee which was great. Of course as you begin you need time to understand how and why things work, but the team are great in pushing you to take on critical tasks as this is vital for my development.
I have developed fundamental project management skills and enhanced my organisation skills which will be useful at University. I have also developed time management skills having had to complete Uni essays alongside full time work.
The Company
Professional, but also very comfortable and welcoming. There's a culture within the company that makes you feel valued no matter your role. It is undoubtedly pressurised at times but there's always someone you can speak to for help.
Very well organised. A huge credit to the Foundation team at IBM who ensure you have everything you need to flourish, from support networks to milestone reviews, the holistic process is second to none
There are as many opportunities to train as you like, whether that be online or at location. however obviously depending on business needs. There is flexibility to go out and learn about any areas that interest you which is a huge plus for working for a firm like IBM
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Working from home
Very appealing for graduates as it is industry renowned for leading in such schemes. There is a huge network of graduates which ensures you have like minded people around you, but there's also a clear career path for those who wish to seek progression.
The Culture
Absolutely. There were around 150 in my office alone, and around 250 nationwide. It makes you feel comfortable in the corporate environment and helps you settle in during the early months
pretty expensive in London but definitely manageable
very good, alot of young people and young professionals. You meet so many people which is a plus. Great location when the weather is good too.
100%. Giveback was actively encouraged and this is also very rewarding when you can give something back to the community and for the firm.
