The Role
Really enjoyed working at Eaton Security business. Always had different opportunities that involved various departments. Had opportunity for international involvement as well.
Not only did I feel appreciated and that my work was of great value to the company, my colleagues were always very supporting, be it in terms of work or outside of work. I know I could rely on them and talk to them if there was anything that bothered me.
The first month or two I have received a lot of support from my supervisor that directly helped with my role. However, as time went on and I got more experience, I became much more independent in my work. Saying that, I was always able to ask my manager and my supervisor any questions I had and I knew they would be able to help me or guide me in the right direction.
Overall, I was not bored. There were times when there was less work, there were times when there was a lot of work. A great thing about working in Eaton was that if you did get bored, or have completed your tasks, you could go to your colleagues and ask if there is anything you could help with, anything you could be involved in and they would be able to provide some new tasks. This was really good, as you had an opportunity to network and further develop variety of skills
I was involved in bug fixing of software that eventually was released to our customers with my fixes. I also was responsible for creating comprehensive testing procedures for the software and hardware. I also got a chance to communicate directly with our big customers and make sure they were receiving best customer support possible. As an intern, I didn't expect to be given this much responsibility, but the trust the management has in you is amazing
I have learned how to manage my priorities and time better, how to communicate my ideas both in writing and speaking. The fact that I had to do a number of presentations and hold a large number of meetings definitely improved my self-confidence and I know I will be able to take more opportunities that are offered in university
The Company
Everyone is very friendly. R&D is very quiet though, but I think it's a given. I have quite a bubbly personality and working in R&D didn't really hinder it, as everyone would join in in the fun, even though most of the time it's quiet. The atmosphere in R&D also helped me to focus better on the work I was doing and has really helped me to stay on top of my tasks
For most part you felt just like an ordinary employee, which was great. Eaton also provided a number of training sessions such as Project Management Skills, which was really well delivered and really helped throughout the placement. All of the training sessions were beneficial and easily applied to the work I've been doing.
Great! Compulsory quarterly reviews with management to make sure you get the most out of your year, training sessions to improve your soft skills, on-site training to improve your technical knowledge and skills. There was everything to help you flourish throughout the year

To me, very appealing. Eaton is a multinational company with a number of different sectors, such as security, aerospace, automotive, etc. This gives an amazing opportunity to explore the industries and not be stuck in one place. The possibility for international work is also impressive and is definitely something of great interest to me. After completing internship, I will be looking for an opportunity to for employment or graduate scheme with the company.
The Culture
We managed to go on a couple of nights out. More often some of us went to the cinema and for dinners.
I had a bit of a difficult situation, as I have a dog, so it was harder to find accommodation, and when I found it, it was more expensive. Socialising was very affordable, especially if you went into Gloucester. Going to Cheltenham was more upmarket and more expensive, but it provided a good night out and a good selection of food and activities.
In the village, where my workplace was based, there was not much to do at all, however Gloucester is only 20 minutes away, Cheltenham is nearby too and both have a lot of options for a night out.
Eaton Security offers football games every week, but there are loads of things to do in Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester to suit any taste in activities.
