    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have greatly enjoyed my placement, I have learned so much about IBM has a business and all the different function. Especially HR which was my subject area. I have been given a lot of responsibility, as well as having support there if I ever needed it.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel hugely valued by my colleagues, they gave me tasks and involved me in project where my input really matters and I was given the opportunity to take lead in certain ones I had the most interest in.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I would have regularly calls with my Task Manager and Placement manager would always have time in his diary for me. On top of this I had 2 work mentors which helped build development plans over the year.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My role was project driven therefore it had peaks and troughs, although I enjoyed as during the busy times I had an end goal and the quieter periods I could get involved in other areas I was interested in.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Huge amount of responsibility, I led workstreams and had the autonomy to make decisions in certain areas. At the same time I always had my managers and mentors there to ask questions and help guide me if needed.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I can see this will help me in seeing the purpose of what I study. Combining the practice with the theory will help bring my degree to life. I am looking forward to going back and building on the skills I have learned this year.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Even though I was based in a virtual team and my manager was in Edinburgh, I would sit with other employees within my sector that were friendly and made me feel at home.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement ran very well, my manager and EPM made sure that I settled in and helped me develop a career plan within IBM.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invest a lot of time in me, the develop my skills and allowed me to take on other projects that gave me better insight into what I wanted to do after my placement.

  • I am very interested to come back to IBM as a consultant.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was around 50-80 intern based in my office. We had 2 social parties planned by the intern group over the year and regularly went for drinks on a Thursday.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost in living in London is very high, therefore you need to be careful with your money each month after your rent goes out. Although near the Southbank office if you go out for drink they normally have deals on for IBM staff.

  • London has great nightlight, always something on to do each weekend.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not that I knew of, but there were a lot of communities that I did not look into over my year being there.
