The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed the placement and felt I got a lot of value out of it. Enough of a challenge to keep you motivated and its your responsibility to rise to it. You are given a lot of responsibility and the work culture is great. Plenty of additional opportunities to develop in any way possible. Absolutely perfect for someone technical minded like myself but other career paths will be also well suited here. Some tasks were not so great and I was doing part of a role which was not described to me at interview so beware that you need to be flexible as you maybe be asked to carry out additional duties to that described to you at interview. I would have preferred to have been given more information on this before I started so it would have been more transparent.
You are not treated as an intern at IBM, you are treated as a fully fledged IBMer and maybe given a lot of authority when dealing with other IBMers. My colleagues consistently provided feedback and I developed relationships with them despite them being remotely based across Europe.
Initially of course you are givne support and guidance but you are expected to learn this quickly and ask questions to deepen your understanding. Remember you need to get to a point where you are acting indvidiually without manager input so rememebr to take notes and ask if you are not sure.
Varied from week to week, some weeks insanely busy but not enough to be drowning in it. Sometimes I worked longer in the evenings and did a few hours in the weekend just to keep myself ahead and to take the pressure off a bit in the week. Nothing major though and this was purely down to choice. Still plenty of time left over for additional development in various areas and education.
I was responsible for my projects and it was down to me to ensure they were moving along. I was making key decisions on these involving quite vast sums of money, so yes there is a lot of responsibility bestowed on you. Hence why it is a competitive company to get into as they will trust you to perform and be responsible. At the end it gives you some very powerful things to talk about on your CV.
I have been able to put into practice what I learnt in my degree and expand in my skills. There are some really good materials available and you can basically learn anything about technology. Over the course of the year I have learnt about Watson, Blockchain, Web development, cloud and much more. In addition to this I have learn about different areas of the business so I have a holistic view of the business. You are encouraged to shadow other IBMers so you can use your time here to explore other career paths and figure out whether it is the right path for you. when you are provided with feedback your manager will also assist in understanding it and how it act upon to make improvements to your performance.
The Company
Somewhat quiet but plenty of social things going on. Would have preferred more educational events to be provided as they all seem to be based in London southbank. that said there is plenty of online materials made avaialble.
