The Role
My placement went as well as I expected. I enjoyed getting into the 9-5 routine and becoming aware of the bigger business world and it was a good experience to kick start my career.
I was valued by my colleagues as I was not treated solely as a 'placement student' - I was brought in on projects, as well as being trusted with responsibilities key to the smooth running of my line of business/
IBM had an internal messaging service which enabled me to both give and receive guidance/support by my management. They were aware that asking too many questions was better than to not ask questions and stall on a task.
My work load varied on a day to day basis. As my roles tasks were on a daily basis, my work load was mostly ticking over however this depended on the degree of project/account work.
Responsibility is something that I was given straight away and it gave me confidence that both my management system and also my colleagues had the trust that I could manage this responsibility well.
As I have not yet finished my placement, I have not been able to transfer this into my degree studies but this placement year has been an invaluable experience and one in which I have gained many transferable skills.
The Company
We were able to speak during office hours and it was one that carried a jokey manner but allowed us to continue our job with a professional nature.
IBM had a Foundation Scheme and Early Professional Managers whom tracker our progress and had an organised manner.
I do not believe I was at the company for long enough for the company to invest in me.
Working from home
IBM provides a comprehensive graduate scheme, in which we are able to apply back for regardless of us undertaking a previous placement year.
The Culture
There was a lot of other placement students around my age and that enabled a good social life, and provide a good social/work balance.
I was located down in Portsmouth, and as this has a strong university contingency, the cost of living and socialising in the area was manageable.
As Portsmouth has a University placed within the middle of the City, there were many areas of the City in which you could enjoy a night out. This al
Yes. IBM has a social club called the 'IBM Club' in which enabled one to become involved in activities outside of work. I was also a member of the IBM Cricket community,
