    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship as various opportunities were available throughout my placement, allowing me to gain experience in different areas of the business and to develop my skills.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I became a significant part of my team as they valued the skills that I introduced to the team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My management always ensured I participated in activities that were around my interest when they came.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload was always changing, but I always had a constant work flow to keep me engaged. Some projects required additional hours over the course of 4 weeks, however these hours were claimed back.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Although I owned various processes throughout the course of my placement, shorter projects also heavily relied on myself as I would be the main focal.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My role included the development of tools that would automate IBM processes. From this I furthered my coding knowledge which relates to my degree studies. Additional resources were available and IBM's "Think 40" requires everybody to have 40 hours minimum of additional learning.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • At the beginning, my office was very lively as new interns were starting the same week as myself. All the interns were socialising and developing relations with our team and the others around us. As they year progressed a stable atmosphere was established and conversations would be more focused to your team and employees in close proximity. Closer to the end of the year the interns would begin to focus on finishing projects and preparing for their replacement, meaning that the office would become quieter as focus is at an all time high.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was a clear structure in which the placement would follow. My previous intern talked me through the year, as well as my manager and EPM - all of which could be found online. It was clear to see what stage I should be at depending on how long I have been there.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • IBM allowed me to take days out to attend events where I would be able to develop on my skills and relay this into my projects.

    2/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Working from home

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There are a lot of opportunities for career growth in IBM, I would be highly interested in applying back to further my career.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All of the interns (about 30) got along very well, and would maintain relations outside of the workplace.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Same as most student towns, easily affordable if you're sensible with your money.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • A few clubs that the interns would go to, and having a University nearby meant that there were always younger crowds around.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • IBM encourage you to get involved with internal and external activities, both from a list or from your own ideas for events. I attended my University and Portsmouth Guild Hall for external events.
