    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Had a really great placement where I got multiple opportunities to start and work on my own projects. I was lucky enough to get lots of varying experience which has helped me a lot in determining what sort or role i will be looking for in the future,

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Probably the best part of my placement was my team. From the first day they were really supportive and made me feel like a valued colleague rather than just a student that was going to be with them for a year. They will defiantly be the part of my placement year that I will miss the most.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a huge amount of support. I think the best part was that if I was having difficulty in a task or made a mistake I always felt confident and comfortable going and asking for help. She has not only supported me in terms of my placement but given me advice on my future career as well as always made an effort to introduce me to influential people.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This would really depend on what was on. When we had massive trade show and events there was often times where I could be late in the office, but always after things died down my days were a little more relaxed, I sometimes even had the opportunity to leave early. I was always very proactive in my role though, so if people were too busy to give me a couple of tasks I was always able to find work for myself.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Throughout the year my responsibility grew to the point where I was the project manager for some of the main events we were doing. I was trusted in handling and creating confidential documents as well as self starting projects and a lot of my work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There were Sony Placement Days which were designed to give us training on Sony as a company, develop specific skills and help us with our CV's, However these days were a complete waste of time. Sometimes we were given a load of work to complete only a couple of days before these ''training's ,which wouldn't even be looked at on the day. On the day that I thought would be the most helpful, where we got CV and interview training we got a list of obvious tips and then we had to peer evaluate each other CV's. I was expecting HR to at least look at our CV's for 5-10 mins each but this didn't happen. These days felt like they were just planned to fit some sort of criteria, but were mostly rushed through and filled with empty advice. I don't think it was considered that we had work to complete back at the office and sometimes it was difficult to take a day out and would a lot of the time mean we were working later days that week. I wouldn't of minded it if these sessions actually provided any use.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It seems like a very relaxed place. You would expect everyone to be dressed in a suit and tie the whole time but this wasn't the case. It was very casual and everyone on my floor was very talkative and friendly, there wasn't anyone that you couldn't approach.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This really depended on your manager, because my manger already had an intern she knew exactly what she needed me to do and also was very positive towards me creating and working on my one projects. Because i am naturally a self-starter I liked this relaxed approach to my work because it gave me more flexibility over when and how my tasks were preformed. The internship was manager perfectly by my team however the HR intern training program could of been organised a lot better.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was able to take part in most of the training that the did however there doesn't seem to be that much in Sony as a company. Individually nothing seemed to be invested in me but I didn't see much being offered around the company anyway.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This wasn't really brought up with any of the interns. We were made aware that they launched a graduate program however received no extra information on it . If i wanted to apply to Sony for a graduate role I think I would have to apply through this program or try and talk to someone from HR.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Amongst my colleagues when we had social events they were great. They only happened once every couple of months though. With the interns if we wanted to do anything socially we would have to organise it ourselves, nothing was every organised by the placement coordinator.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I decided to live in London during my placement as I knew that Weybridge was a dull sound. I wouldn't of been able to afford it without support from my parents because it was extremely expensive.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • No nightlife, Sometimes the interns would make trips to London but they would either have to take the early train at 1am or wait until the next one at 7am.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really .
