The Role
My placement was thoroughly enjoyable, I was presented with many opportunities and always received encouragement in all task I completed. The yearlong placement with Eaton helped me to develop a variety of skills and helped me to develop an understanding of the dynamics of a work place and working a nine till five job.
During my placement I was part of a very small team, this made me feel more valued and appreciated as I knew all the work I was completing was a great help and my contributions effected the department positively. Eaton’s interns are treated as real employees and given important responsibilities.
Throughout the year my manger supported me consistently, I always knew she was there for me if I needed anything. All the managers within m sector were extremely friendly and always happy to help and support the interns in any way they could. The Inter training days also meant constant support and development throughout the year.
On a daily basis I was very busy, being part of a small team meant there was always work to be picked up and completed. The work load meant I always had something to do but my supportive manger ensured I was never overwhelmed. Having lots to do was one of the main reasons why I enjoyed my placement.
During my placement I was the only full time member of staff in my department, this meant in the afternoons I had the responsibly of ensuring the department kept running smoothly. Throughout the year my manager noticed my passion for events and passed me the responsibility of coordinating and attending events by myself.
The skills I have developed over the year could not have been taught in a classroom which is why my placement year will help me in the future. Eaton also offer many training days which will help me progress and develop my skills in the future as I can now put my learning's into practice.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was positive and calm, at work I felt I belonged to a community of people which made me feel very comfortable. Everybody in the office were friendly and always wanted to help you out. This meant coming to work was an enjoyable and positive experience.
The placement year was very well organised, training days throughout the year ensured constant development and reflection. My weeks were also well managed and organised. I never had a boring day and always had the opportunity to develop the skills I was learning. The placement manager had also set the year up very well.
Eaton invested a lot of time and effort in to me and the other interns. Training days throughout the year helped all interns to develop as well as training on the job. The company is prepared to invest a lot of time in to all of their employees and make sure you feel a valued part of the team.
Working from home
Eaton offer many graduate placements which are constantly discussed. A milestone event at the end of the year allows all interns to explain their contributions to the company for the year and fight for a place on the graduate scheme before these places have been released, meaning Eaton really value their interns first.
The Culture
All of the inters within Eaton form a community and network and constantly support each other. Within my internship I had the opportunity to build relationships with all the interns on nights out and other social events. This was a lovely bonus to the years placement and an opportunity to network.
The cost of living in the area was reasonable, a local university meant I could live with people my own age. The local university meant that night life and social events within the area were also good. Working far from home meant I had the opportunity to experience another city.
The bars were nice in the area I worked, the local restaurants were even nicer offering a wide range of choice. The social activities and other things to do in the area were also positive. Christmas time was a lovely time in the area with Christmas markets and small stands offering quick buy presents.
Eaton offer a wellness programme and throughout the year you can get involved in activities they organise such as football and walking. Eaton also allow you to help in the community, whilst on placement I volunteered at the local nursing home and would take cake and sit and chat with the residents.
