The Role
I really enjoyed my time at Hays. This was a year long work placement in which I was able to genuinely interact with employees from junior to senior level on a daily basis. I was also given a lot of exposure into the industry I was working in and learned a lot of detail. I really enjoyed working closely alongside a team and being mentored by a manager, senior team members and my director.
I was fully integrated into the team and regarded as a full consultant, rather than "an intern". This made me want to work harder and develop myself further, to contribute to the team and be on par with my colleagues and their accomplishments.
The management was very supportive from my first day at Hays. The culture is unique in that managers across different teams are helpful and will always give advice when and where needed. I was able to interact with my director on a daily basis, and able to seek her advice on various matters if my manager was out of the office.
As the role is highly varied, every day is different. This means that on some days I would be very busy and put in longer hours than normal, whilst other days I would be fairly light on work.
I was a 180 consultant, which means that I only interacted with candidates. However, my manager trusted me to interact with clients and on site contacts as well. I was given a fair amount of responsibility, with client interaction where possible. I could have benefited from more client exposure.
The skills developed at Hays, majorly working hard, long hours and staying focused, will assist me in my degree studies and beyond as these are essential life skills. In my final year of university, it will help me stay focused for final exams. Beyond, Recruitment has given me a lot of transferable skills including communication skills and confidence in interacting with stakeholders.
The Company
The general atmosphere was friendly and quite fun overall.
There is a guided programme for all placement students, including training that is set up to guide you and regular check ins. It might be worth continuing check-ins towards the end of placement, to see how the student is doing and review the year with them.
There was a lot of personal training and development in the first 6 months of the internship.
Financial Bonus
Quite a lot starting salary for working in central London.
The Culture
Good social scene, a lot of fun social events and after work drinks. Not many regular organised socials for placement students.
Very expensive
Many pubs and bars located around the area, easily accessible for after work.
