The Role
The placement was informative, fun, and exciting. The experience has been invaluable - I went into a department which I did not know much about, but by the end of my month I was confident in handling every task that was asked of me.
I found that every task I did for my colleagues was highly appreciated and they made sure to thank me and stress the importance of the task. I was, however, keen to get myself involved in other larger tasks but that unfortunately never came about.
I was assigned two graduate mentors. I therefore felt very comfortable within the team and had plenty of people other than my mentors to turn to if I wasn't confident in what I was doing. They were both very friendly, along with everyone else in the department.
In order to be busy it was essential for me to ask for extra tasks. I never had the opportunity to get into a proper project, so the tasks typically lasted 30 minutes each. However the opportunity to ask for tasks around the office meant that I had the chance to network with other people and learn about different sectors of the department.
Since the internship lasts just a month there is limited scope to the amount of responsibility that can be landed on the interns shoulders. This being said by the end of the placement I was delegated tasks which had more responsibility attached to them, and I could feel the team begin to trust my ability by placing more tasks on my head,
The skills I have learnt are invaluable and will greatly assist my degree and studies beyond. The placement has inspired me to apply for a masters degree after my non-cognate degree in 2018, and has shown me what it is like to be in a corporate office environment,
The Company
This was probably the best bit of the placement for me. Everyone was very friendly and it was easy for me to integrate in. There is a definite family atmosphere around the office - I could tell that the employees were friends, not colleagues.
Fantastically well organised. HR organised departmental overview lectures at least 3 times a week so that we could understand everything that Savills does. They even organised walking tours of The City so that we could see the tangible evidence of Savills' projects.
HR and each department take an integrated approach develop our professionalism. Each department wants to see you progress which is really evident, so they invest a lot of time in making sure you get the broad understanding of what each department does.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I thought Savills comes across as a small family company environment within a large corporate global business. I find this really appealing, and the prospect of working for Savills is thus very exciting.
The Culture
Yes. HR made sure to lay on plenty of networking events between the interns. There was 18 of us and we would regularly go for lunch and drinks together. HR would even organise 'rounders in the park' which, although seeming slightly forced, was great fun and a great way to get to know the other interns,
The office is based at Oxford Circus so it is fairly expensive for lunch, so it is recommended that you bring a packed lunch. Most of the interns would commute in which takes around an hour.
There are plenty of good bars, pubs, and clubs around Oxford Street. Soho is a good area to visit, and Covent Garden or Farringdon is just a 10 min tube away.
I wasn't made aware of Savills activities to get involved in outside of the ones HR laid on for us. However, I do know that other interns got involved with Savills' hockey, football, and rugby 7s teams, so they do exist, you just need to ask around for them if you want to get involved.
