The Role
I really enjoyed my work placement, it gave a really good experience into the field of work and I have a lot of fun
Colleagues treat you as close to a full time employee as possible, get involved in team meetings and discussions and your ideas taken on board.
Given enough support and guidance to be able to know what you are doing and they helped with anything I asked for help with, but gave independence and also let you find out things for yourself
It varied a little, in the beginning as you learn and get the hang of what you are doing it is less busy, but that picks up as you get to know what you are doing. But times that are quiet can be used for doing reading and project work etc.
I was given responsibility for developing an assay for use and other bits and pieces
The skills I have developed will directly help in my final year of university, directly in the lab I will have the skills and working practices to start work quicker. My work style has developed to be more efficient now and skills such as how to read papers and take in information better will serve me well. Beyond, its is a great thing to be able to show and talk about when going for jobs that you have worked in such a good company
The Company
Generally fun, there were socials organised and the students made a good community
Once learning job-specific things in the department the placement was run very well
There is a lot invested in training, you are put on anything that might be relevant and encouraged to go to seminars and learn about other areas of the company
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
They are good, but need to make decisions quite early on as to what you want your first steps to be
The Culture
Yes lots of students who all socialise
Not too bad for the south, and you are earning
Not great in itself but there are loads of students so can be good
Yes and it's great to get outside of work, but have to take that initiative for yourself
