The Role
I enjoyed my internship a lot. The people within the company are what makes it such a good place to work. Everyone there is really 'normal' and approachable, from receptionists to partners. The people running the internship always have your best interests at heart, whether that be at the firm and within their department or not. The opportunity to investigate other departments is always available and if you have any questions about anything you can always ask - anyone.
Obviously the tasks you get given to do are quite low level, there is only so much you can learn in 5-6 weeks. However, the training which you receive at the start of the internship sets you up so when you go out on a job you can contribute to the work straight away. This is really valuable as it means that you don't feel like you are wasting the managers time, in them teaching you the basics.
Managers were always on hand for you to ask questions and to go through things before you get started on a task. However, once you get going they are perfectly happy to let you get on with the job which is nice, obviously still be available for questions should you need their help.
The working environment is relaxed but productive. One of the best things about the firm is that whilst the culture is friendly and everyone gets on; when it is time to work everyone switches on, is professional and gets the job done. You sometimes have to be patient whilst seniors finish tasks before they can give you something else to do but this is the only time you will be twiddling your thumbs. The tasks you get given are usually quite large and so this waiting for instructions is few and far between.
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my internship. I felt as though I was a valued part of the team and I was contributing towards the end goal. However, someone will always check your work so the possibility of letting the company down by making a basic error is taken away, easing the pressure on the work that you complete.
The internship is perfect for finding out what you want to do. It will allow you to decide whether the accounting profession is for you and if that is the case which sector within the profession you would like to go into. Interns spend most of their time in audit but time in other sectors can be requested and is really valuable. This gives you a chance to see all of the services that the company provides and what it might be like to work in that area. During my internship I requested to have a look at what working in tax might be like. This was arranged straight away without a problem and was invaluable as I decided tax was the place for me.
The Company
The people couldn't be nicer! Everyone was approachable and friendly, interested in getting to know you and more than willing to tell you about their experiences. This culture is how GT differentiate themselves from the big 4 and they did more than a good job in showing that.
The internship is very well set up and organised, you receive a plan of what you will be doing throughout and someone will be in contact to help you to do so. For example someone will organise your train tickets for away days and hotels for over night stays if necessary. The presentation skills course at Bradenham is also very well organised and informative. The only problem I have had is claiming back car miles but this should all be sorted in due course.
As I said before the people within the company have your best interests at heart. The presentation skills course will improve your presentation skills immeasurably. I felt whilst working there as though I worked there full time and this really gave me a more professional attitude which I will carry with me into the last year of my university course.
Company Parties/Events
I did an internship within Audit but, after spending some time in tax, applied for a graduate position in corporate tax and I start (subject to getting a 2.1 in September 2012).
The Culture
The office invited us to the staff summer BBQ before we started which was a great chance to socialise and get to know the people from the office. Groups within the office all got on and often socialised together, everyone very aware that there is life beyond work.
I did my internship where I attend university and so in that respect no additional costs were incurred throughout my time there.
During my 5 week internship I didn't really experience the nightlife as I was travelling home at weekends. However, I'm sure the opportunity would be there should you wish to get involved.
I was only there for 5 weeks but there was a couple of opportunities to get involved with people outside work. They were good to attend and to get to know more people from throughout the office.
