The Role
I was lucky enough during my placement to have the freedom to plan my own projects and learn about the things that interested me, not just what was assigned as suitable for my role. I was allowed to challenge myself in areas I would not usually have been able to work in and massively expanded my understanding of risk.
Being on a small site with a close knit team meant that I made not only work colleagues but friends, who supported me both professionally and personally.
I was given lots of freedom by my management and the opportunity to stretch and challenge myself, with support if I needed it. However due to a lack of resource sometimes it was quicker to work things out for myself.
There was always something to be done and never a dull moment.
I was fortunate to have two big projects, both of which I was able to see the benefit of. Day to day tasks gave me the same level of responsibility as all other analysts on the team. I was also given the responsibility of training new starters which made me think about my work in a different way and broadened my own understanding.
I have learned not only about lab techniques that will assist my degree stream but expanded on them, using technology I would not normally use. I have also been able to strengthen my ability to work across boundaries, teach and my resilience.
The Company
At times things were hectic but there was always cake around during the harder periods to lighten the day. The team always supported each other and got along well.
As my supervisor left unexpectedly, my work changed throughout the course of the placement.
Training I received was mostly work orientated. However I did get to go to an amazing event for international women's day which was very inspirational.

My placement was extended until I go back to university and I have applied for the graduate scheme
The Culture
None of the other students lived local to me and the company events were mostly in London.
Being close to London and not being paid much to begin with meant that money was tight. I just say though the company decided to increase wages to London based living wage at the end of my placement.
The nightlife was great if you wanted to be stabbed or raped. But the area I worked in and subsequently lived in was not very safe.
I was invited to school fairs and STEM events.
