The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my year at IBM. There were multiple opportunities widely available for me to take on. I got to experience multiple business units such as Watson, Security, Analytics and the Design Studio. I was also involved in running exciting events with external clients and got to pitch ideas to clients such as Wimbledon. I made tons of friends as the firm takes on a large number of students, grads and interns.
I was made to feel important at IBM, I had to present data to the Senior Leadership Team who then used the data to change the business model of the business unit. Not once did I feel like "just an intern". I was well looked after and was allowed to work from home when I needed to.
All managers were willing to help as much as they could given their hectic timetables!
My role was very hectic and I was constantly busy. Even during quiet times such as the Christmas period, I was able to keep myself busy completing my university assignments.
I was responsible for providing accurate data to the Senior Leaders of the business unit who then used to make strategy plans. Using my presentations they gave promotions and planned their hiring strategy for the new take of graduates. I was also trusted to cover my manager when she was out.
I have gained so much confidence when it comes to presenting. I'm also better at using Excel spreadsheets. I'm no longer as afraid to ask for help, as I've now realised the true importance of getting things right first time.
The Company
The atmosphere was great in the office. This does differ between the departments within IBM. In my particular business unit, there is a great mix of students, grads and regular employees. The Senior Leadership Team mingled with the rest of the team regardless if you were an intern or permanent employee.. or even subcontractor!
At the start of my internship, my role wasn't very defined. This was only because the business unit itself is very new. As the year went on, I was given more and more responsibilities and learned more about the unit. This then resulted in my role becoming more defined and structured.
I didn't receive much training. There were opportunities to get involved in some internal training such as app development, STEM, Design Thinking, presentation skills etc the list goes on. I took part in the Foundation Customer Journey Project and learned how to develop an app, how to video screens, how to make a presentable and professional video and much more!
