About You
The vacation scheme was a great insight into life as a trainee. It was fun, challenging and fast-paced.
I felt very valued at the firm. There was a great emphasis placed on my training and enjoyment. In addition, whilst working, it was always made clear to me how the tasks I was completing were useful/important.
Each vacation scheme student was assigned a trainee buddy, who provided useful support and guidance. All other staff members, including the most senior, always made time to answer any questions and explain what they were working on.
I developed my professional writing skills. I also received useful advice on confidence and poise in the workplace, which I hope to implement in the future.
The Company
The scheme was extremely well structured. We received a handbook on the first day which set out our schedule for the whole scheme. The fortnight had a great balance of pre-planned activities (such as networking events, socials and pro bono work), as well as unplanned time working within the departments.
I found that the general atmosphere was very welcoming. Everyone worked hard and it was busy, but I never felt like anyone didn't have time to speak to me.
The scheme provided a good insight into being a trainee at the firm, as each student is able to complete trainee tasks, talk to solicitors in the firm and attend specific departmental talks.
I found that working within two departments, going social events and attending networking opportunities was an excellent way to learn about the intangible aspects of the company culture. In my experience, everyone was hard-working, professional, sociable and friendly. All the vacation schemers felt included and the firm’s cohesive culture was clear.
Everything Else
I was paid £275 per week. In addition, several meals were provided for by the firm. I feel that the pay was very reasonable. However, those who had to pay for accommodation in London may have found that their budget was rather tight.
A lot! Over the two week scheme, I attended two external dinners (with drinks and games), as well as several internal after-work drink events, networking lunches, presentations and workshops. Outside the official timetable, I also went to lunch with two trainees, had several breakfasts with my fellow vacation schemers and coffee meetings with trainees/associates.
Great! The social events organised by the trainees, in particular, were well chosen and organised.
