The Role
The Company
My department was certainly more laid back than others, but everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. The office was open-plan so it was very easy to ask questions and join in useful conversations. My Supervisor sat near by so any little queries I had or updates I wanted to give was very easy to do so. There was definitely a good balance between quiet working and friendly/fun conversations.
I was lucky to have one main project that lasted the duration of my placement stay. I was also involved in smaller projects that I could complete when my main project had quieter patches. There was a dedicated group for placement students that met regularly and organised interesting talks and events that were relevant to placement students. At the end of the year all of the placement students were invited to present some of their work to the senior leadership team and other colleagues.
I certainly developed in myself and developed a whole range of skills, but I didn't specifically attend training organised by the company. I did however attend a First Aid course, and went to various talks put on for all employees about topics such as Stroke etc.

There seems to be positions available across a whole range of departments, however the company only offer a small graduate scheme, which is open to HR graduates only. With regards to full time positions, I know of two colleagues who previously completed a placement year and have since returned to the company in a full time position.
The Culture
We reguarly organised social events specifically for placement students. Myself and colleagues within my department also went out for meals and drinks on a few occassions throughout the year.
Personally, I lived in Canterbury, about 14 miles away from where I worked. Compared to the are, Canterbury is more expensive to live, but socialising in the area was very reasonable.
There are lots of bars and pubs around the area.
I registered as a STEM Ambassador and volunteered for four events during my placement year.
