The Role
The placement year at HPE was an invaluable experience with a real exposure to management and sales teams, responsibilities that had effects on the organisation and a direct insight into working for a multinational.
The team were great but more recognition would have been beneficial as an incentive/ reward for hard work and adding value.
Regular one to ones with my manage and many other in the company were approachable to help with personal development.
Reviews/ quarter end/ the way the financial year is shaped means that certain periods were definitely more demanding than others. Could definitely be more project work offered to interns when workload is minimal.
A lot of responsibility in terms of ownership of important files/ data points for senior management - assumes accountability of where numbers come from.
Valuable excel skills were learnt to take back to University as well as a competent knowledge of the IT industry and HPE's strategy in the market. Confidence, presentation skills and other interpersonal skills were also well developed over the year, however i believe there could have been more training and opportunities for interns to get involved in customer facing projects to learn even more valuable skill sets.
The Company
Poor attendance in the main office with many people who hot desk working from home. Following expense cuts, office was busier but a bit of a shame interns didn't get much opportunity to go and visit the London office for team meetings etc. Towards the end of the year atmosphere improved with a new Site leader.
Good organisation but lack of consistency across intern roles (more opportunities to people in sales teams).
The company valued the work I put in to a certain extent, but offered little opportunity to get further qualifications or attend training/ kick off events that the company offered.
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Not sure there is an appropriate role for me - all sales based are in Scotland and don't want to relocate.
The Culture
Yes, lots of interns - great community.
Reading is an expensive area to live and the company wage was not great.
Good access to London.
Lots of volunteering opportunities
