    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my internship as I felt I got "real" work and actually contributed to the project, rather than getting work with little responsibility like interns often get. There were many opportunities to network with senior employees and fellow interns and I have met a lot of great people that I hope to keep in touch with in the future.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued as I was working on quite large parts of the project and my work would have a big impact on the future work in the project. I worked closely with a couple of colleagues and they were always happy to hear my suggestions and ideas even though I had far less experience than them in a work environment.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • To a great extent. Whenever I needed help with something or had forgotten the details of my task I was able to ask a colleague for help and he would spend at least an hour a day sat with me discussing ideas of how I could complete my task. However, unfortunately, I felt he was the only person on my team that would help me to this extent and I did not approach others when I was in need.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It would vary, some days I had a lot to do and other days I did not really have any substantial tasks and wasn't sure what to do. The tasks in my project came as and when they were created, as apposed to an entire storyboard for the project being decided beforehand which would have been a lot more organized and keep me more busy.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I feel I was given a lot of responsibility as I designed quite large parts of the project. I had to build classes and data structures that future parts of the project would heavily rely on and if I did not design them well then it would have had a major negative impact on the outcome of the project and could have wasted other people's time having to fix it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I completed university when I started this internship so they will not help me with my degree, but they will very much help me with my further career if I choose to stay in Technology. I learned how software development is performed in a work environment and how this differs from university. This was something my previous internship at a different company did not provide me as they used very unorthodox methods.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office was 10 minutes away from the main office where the vast majority of the interns were based. My office was not as exciting looks or atmosphere wise and a room full of tech developers lacks excitement. However, there was the occasional social event, such as a Strawberries and Cream Tennis day, which were very fun.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was quite well organized but could have been improved by giving me a project which was entirely self contained and could be completed by me start to finish within the 9 week timeframe. I felt tasks came to me as and when they were created, rather than a definitive plan being made beforehand as to what we needed to implement.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The entire first week we completed training which involved group activities, learning about the financial markets, learning how to use Excel proficiently and even a volunteering scheme at a school. Most of these training events were run by other companies, rather than UBS, so the firm quite heavily invested into the training scheme I would say.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing, I would love to work here again. The reason I have not given a score of 10 however is that it would be nice to get some experience in other companies first before I decide where to settle down for a long period. I would need to compare and contrast it with other companies to decide where the best place to work for me would be.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The interns were social and we always met up for drinks on Fridays. However, I found after the first couple of weeks everyone stuck to their own business groups rather than socializing with all interns. There could have been more social events organized with all the interns to keep us close to everyone and stop us from forming sub groups.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area is central London so it was very expensive to live there and socialize there. My rent was £720 a month, a pint was around £5, and club entry was up to £20. However, the good public transport available in London meant that we could easily travel to other areas of the city to socialize for a slightly lower price. I am used to London prices from University however.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • We were based very close to Old Street station and in this area you can find various famous clubs and bars such as XOYO, Cargo and Bounce so the nightlife was very good. There was a wide range of pubs, bars, and clubs and so there was something for everyone. They were however very expensive, as previously mentioned above.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a decent amount of opportunities to get involved in things like social events. For example, I helped out at the Strawberries and Cream Tennis day social event in my office. There was also a charity 5k run in the first couple of weeks run by JP Morgan that interns were free to join in with and then attend a barbeque afterwards to network with other runners.
