The Role
I really enjoyed my summer internship at Atkins. Friendly colleagues, love the flexi hours. However at the time they were going through a mass redundancy so morale was a bit low.
By most I felt valued and part of the team, but some did make me feel like a child out of place
Was given the support and guidance by management when needed, but 2 managers were off at the same time for a week, who I needed support from.
It varied a lot. When there was a job on I would be given work, but when there was a lack of work then I wouldn't have anything to do. So was around 50/50
When there was a job on, I was the only electrical engineer (even though I'm a student) available, so I had to take on full responsibility for a job
The skills I developed with definitely help me in future when it comes to getting a job. They won't necessarily help with my degree studies though
The Company
When I first started my placement the atmosphere was good, but then due to redundancies the atmosphere did become quite dull.
My placement poorly set up at first, nothing was put into place, so for the first 2 weeks I couldn't do anything. But in terms of getting the placement that was set up well.
Atkins didn't personally invest in any training for me, but CPD's were put on to help my personal development and I learnt on the job.
I would love to work for Atkins, I have been offered a graduate scheme for the following year.
The Culture
Yes, at dinners I'd get invited out with other colleagues. There weren't any other summer placements though.
I didn't live or socialise in this area.
Didn't go out in the area at night so can't say.
Not many but they do arrange to go out for drinks/meal every so often (once every 2 months).
