The Role
I really enjoyed my placement. I had a lot of responsibility and I had a chance to expand on the knowledge I have gained at university.
I felt very valued. Everyone was very helpful and kind, and willing to listen to what I have to say. They were always available to help me.
I always knew there was someone to go to if I needed help or had any questions. They wanted me to get as much as possible from my internship.
I had periods of being very busy but there were days when there wasn't as much to do. I was quite lucky though, as some summer students went for a few days with basically nothing to do.
I was in a small project team for a large part of my placement so I had quite a lot of responsibility. If I didn't do the work then it wouldn't get done in time. I was also able to go to several meetings and workshops.
This placement gave me the opportunity to put some of the skills I already had to practical use. I also found out a lot more about the specific sector I worked in. I think the experience of working in an office is invaluable as well.
The Company
Everyone was really friendly. People often brought in food/snacks from there holidays. There was a staff kitchen and several grads so there were young people there as well. People were working hard but they always had time for you.
When I first arrived it was a little chaotic, setting up my computer account etc. I was put straight on a project so I had to do the induction activities alongside my work which meant I don't think I got all the benefit of them.
I learnt a whole new CAD software programme which was really useful. However I wasn't given any formal training so at first I was constantly asking my colleagues for help.
Company Parties/Events
I would really like to come back for another summer placement next year, hopefully I will be able to!
The Culture
yes, in my first week the office went bowling, which was a great way to meet my colleagues. There was also a volleyball tournament after work one day. The grads/apprentices/summer students ate together at lunch time informally which was nice. I would have liked to have a regularly weekly event like the pub or something though.
I was living in with my family during my placement. It was in London so prices were as you expect. The travel to work was quite expensive from my house
I didn't really go out where I worked because I was at home so I went out nearer me. They might be good though, not sure.
there were some social events eg. bowling and volleyball.
