The Role
Working here has given me such a better understanding of how industry works. Learning and participating in activities to deliver work have been such a great experience.
Colleagues here are very polite and approachable if you have any questions.
I had support whenever I asked questions. Answers aren't always given straight away (may take an hour sometimes) but I learned a level of patience that you have to value with colleagues as they have other stuff to get on with that needs doing.
Currently (as of writing) my workload has been a bit sparse, I always have to ask around for work which I hope will change soon. However, I have work to do most of the time which is important and there is some responsibility that goes with it. I'm looking to get this tested further just before I come to the end of my placement.
Again, there is a level of trust between all parties and I've always done the work I've been given. I've had to meet certain deadlines to get stuff in for but I haven't felt like I've been truly tested as of yet.
I've learnt a lot about the process of delivering work in a project from a highways point of view. I've learnt a wide range of computer skills from CAD to database management. I've also been able to learn about myself more as I've been able to compare my goals to others who may/ may not have achieved what I hope to.
The Company
I love the office, the people here make this place feel great. I've been invited to events outside of work which make me feel like I'm part of the group which is fantastic.
The placement was set up well in a sense that everything was put in place and was flexible as I had to change my start date. However, there was lots and lots of paperwork to fill in at the start of my placement which was tedious.
The company have given me the opportunity to see what work is really like. I have learnt about project management, CAD and IT skills which help me appreciate my practice more.
Atkins are a large company that employs lots of people that all do different things. Hopefully, I will be able to return as it has been hinted by my managers but I am a bit unsure of how I should approach it.
The Culture
There's another starter here who happened to start after me. We have the occasional chat which is nice.
The cost of food and drink can be more expensive than home as it is in a city. However, I don't stay here much outside of work hours.
I don't go out much while I'm back from university so I wouldn't know.
I feel I do enough outside of work anyway to explore opportunities around the area.
