The Role
The work placement gave me a good insight as to what working in a large company would be like. I worked with teams all over the country so got to see how teams work together when not working in the same office. This made me feel like I was part of the team and enjoyed my placement.
Colleagues I was working with and general colleagues were all very helpful and supportive. If I ever had a question there would be someone willing to help/answer. I got to bring in some of my own experience from my course, so felt that I was contributing as well as gaining experience. As well as this I was assigned onto a project with a team so knew that I would be assisting with the a set goal.
I was assigned a "buddy" to help me with day to day work and to help me settle in. This allowed me to get up to speed quickly with the business process and document types and feel that I was wanted to be able to input into the work actively.
I had a good balance of doing work for the project I was taking part on and getting the chance to see how the business operates. As well as this I took part in training both from courses and having time to teach my self new and relevant skills with people around me who could answer my questions.
I was given a role in a team which had set deadlines to meet, every bit of work was reviewed and I was doing work as well as reviewing others. Having to work for deadlines made it feel that I was playing a role in the team and holding a responsibility to achieve the work by the set deadline.
The internship has assisted me with time management, which will assist me in both my degree studies and any future jobs. I have also gained an insight into the business process and how they operate internally and externally. This will mean I am more familiar with potential future processes and understand how a business operates as well as how every bodies roles work together.
The Company
Very positive, everybody was willing to talk if they weren't to busy there were board games sessions every Wednesday and there were social events rather regularly (office only and multiple offices) this meant that everybody knew each other and was talkative. At lunch everybody would sit together and it was all very easy/chilled.
Process for applying was standard (good), responded very quickly to progress through stages (within a week) and heard back very fast after the final interview. Upon arrival they had set me up with laptop/adapters and other equipment needed making me immediately feel welcome. As well as this I was assigned a graduate "buddy" as someone to talk through any questions I may have on day to day work and whats its like to work there. My boss was very supportive and made sure I was doing what I wanted to, where he could, as the company is contract based work the work they are doing changes regularly.
Gave me time to do personal development training, technical and social. Since it was only a summer placement, I did not expect to get much investment in me, but they were very keen to make sure I got what I wanted out of the placement which was ideal. I was able to arrange meetings with my boss to ensure I was getting what I wanted out of the placement.
The people there were very nice and the nature of the varying work, making this a potential long term job after graduating. The grad scheme looks good as you get to cover lots of areas of the business and work where interests you at the end of it all. The company is continuing to expand meaning that it is a good potential place to work at.
The Culture
Regular event were hosted in the local area that were mostly for graduates (hosted by older graduates). this meant that it was easy to settle in. As well as this there were sports clubs that any one could participate in, these would normally occur over lunch time meaning that most people were available to take part.
N/A - I commuted from home Canteen was a good price though and had varied meals.
N/A
There were multiple sports clubs that would run events at lunch on work days as well as some on the weekends. There were also company organised events that would take place less frequently but were normally subsidized tickets to events, so people would go as groups to these events (e.g. ascot)
