The Role
I have enjoyed being able to undertake projects that will contribute to the growth of the department I have been working in. Although it took sometime for something substantial to come my way, as the department has been light on work from the get go. I tried my best to be proactive in securing work for myself to do and contribute to other projects when I could. The site visits I did were also very beneficial and a welcome change of scene
As I have only been undertaking an 8 week internship, making myself valued I felt was difficult due to the limited time I was here. I did however make sure whatever work I was given I performed to the best of my abilities and mad sure it would become a valued piece of work.
If I had a question, anyone was available to answer it. This I felt was very good and helped me along. My line manager was very good indeed. For the times I had no work, he went out of his way to secure something for me to do which I appreciated.
For the first few weeks, not very. The work I was doing at the start was very mundane and not really suited for my engineering background. I then was given some work which can be very valued towards on going projects. I was though exceptionally bored for a good few days with absolutely nothing to do
As I am only here for 8 weeks, I felt I wasn't given enormous responsibilities, but the work I was given I was entrusted to do I had to handle vast quantities of information and collate it into a format that is expected.
The art of looking busy when you aren't I shall take forward as a life skill for future jobs. The projects I have been examining has given me a wider understanding of what the company gets involved in and I can use this knowledge to give a more in-depth understanding of what goes on
The Company
The general atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. People will make the effort to come and talk with you and will make the time for you if you need it.
I felt for a company of this size and prestige that the internship will be well run and well structured, setting out what I would be doing for the 8 weeks. I was however surprised to find out that it was a case of having to go around and find something to do. In that regard I was very disappointed and it only took until my 5th week for something substantial to come my way which would actually require some of the knowledge I have been taught at university
For some reason, the company would not invest in me getting a CSCS card which would be hugely beneficial for me in my career as an engineer. I have been self taught on various pieces of software whilst I've been here which I believe I can take forward. But I believe, again, that it was due to my short time here that the company weren't going to shell out on expensive traing and development.
National Travel
For this department I am in 2 minds about it as I was so disappointed and bored at the start and I felt that no one was really seeing that I had nothing to do. But it has opened a door for me which can lead me back here or move about within the organisation.
The Culture
Yes I say there was. The year long placement student was very good and showed and taught me a lot about who's who and what's what. I'll admit that I haven't made much of an effort to engage with people around the office, which I should of done. But there are numerous social activities which go on outside of work to further the bond between co-workers.
Live at home, so it was free. But the South East is expensive so it is what it is.
Don't know, live at home.
Yes, but I don't like football so I passed on that.
