The Role
I very much enjoyed my internship at Savills, Wimborne. The team took their time explaining tasks to me and answering any questions I had in detail, which was extremely useful and beneficial considering I had very little previous property experience. I was given a varied range of jobs, and I liked how the internship was structured with intermittent webinars.
From day one I was made to feel welcome and valued by my colleagues. It felt good to complete tasks that I could see were helping or making a difference, and it was nice to be appreciated for this, no matter how small or large the task was (eg. building a marketing folder through to designing how it should all be displayed on the website).
I always felt I had someone to turn to if I was stuck or in need of a new job. My supervisors were very approachable and friendly and always happy to help. They explained things clearly and always made sure I was comfortable with what I was doing and that I had things to get on with. They also helped me greatly with my summer scheme project.
Having the summer project to do was useful on days where there was less to do. For the first 2 weeks I had plenty of tasks to get on with, but for the third week I had more time to spare, but therefore could spend time on my project instead. I was never too busy.
Considering I had very little property experience prior to this internship at Savills I was given a good amount of responsibility. I was trusted with some fairly big tasks although I knew these would be checked after I completed them so I never felt uncomfortable or out of my depth. I certainly wasn't running the show but I felt that I was contributing and was appreciated for this.
As I am starting a masters in September, everything I learned on this internship will be beneficial. I made a point of writing down every new term or abbreviation I learned so I can really see my improvement. The team were very good at explaining things to me in a simplified way which was helpful. I also developed an array of skills that I can take forward to the applications, interviews and assessment days that lie ahead and beyond to my (hopefully) eventual career in property.
The Company
I loved the general atmosphere in the office, which was both relaxed and hard working, and felt I could be myself whilst in the office. I felt included, and everyone was very friendly toward one another. I liked the fact it wasn't dead silent in my department so I never felt uncomfortable speaking or asking questions.
I was given all the information I needed prior to arriving on my first day and felt the HR team was always in contact throughout the internship. I liked that we had intermittent webinar sessions which helped structure the internship. I never felt like I didn't know what I was doing.
I hope to apply for the grad scheme in September although this will be for the London Office. I like how the company offers outstanding training for the APC and how you are supported throughout this and afterwards. I think the company has a great vision and strategy and it is something I would like to be a part of.
The Culture
At lunch time I socialised with the other intern in the office, who I got on really well with, and some of my other colleagues which was nice, however as I lived fairly far away there wasn't really any opportunity for me to socialise after work which was a shame.
As I lived quite far away I wasn't able to participate in that many activities outside of work. I was invited to some cricket/tennis matches but wasn't able to go. I did however get to go on a department 'away day' with another office which was a good chance to get to know my fellow colleagues better and was great fun. I have also been invited to a young professionals boat party after work later this week which Savills has organised and should also be a good way to meet knew people and build my network.
