    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • At Virgin Media there are a huge amount of opportunities. I worked in the marketing department of the B2B arm of Virgin Media (Virgin Media Business). I received a lot of support, but also flexibility to work on my own projects and come up with my own ideas.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • 100% valued - At Virgin Media Business you are valued just as a normal full-time employee. Everyone gives you opportunities to grow and there is lots of work to get involved in. I've never been asked to complete as piece of work simply because I was an intern. Any work I have completed or have been asked to complete is in line with my objectives.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Lots of support from my close and wider team. I also shadowed various people in the rest of the business, and people were very happy to help out. Very nice to see in a company.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Quite busy most days - but very manageable workload. Typically for marketing, I was required to work slightly longer hours closer to deadlines, simply to ensure the work was done. However, it was never a case of having to work longer hours out of no-choice.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A huge amount of responsibility - I had to managed a large pipeline and work directly with sales to track their performance of this pipeline.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Looking back at to the beginning of the year, I've learnt an unbelievable amount. In terms of assisting in my degree, not so much. However, that's because I have discovered an area of business (marketing) that I enjoy and am passionate about - this is a different area to my degree topic.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great atmosphere in the office most of the time - fun and relaxed. Quite flexible in terms of working life and working hours.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My work placement was very organised as I had clear objectives for the full year. I always new what work I had coming up in the pipeline, and what the deadlines were.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 4 x training sessions annually. Optional further training sessions. Virgin Media invest a lot of time, effort and money into making the 12-month placement a scheme with lots of training opportunities as possible. I was always encouraged to develop and expand on my personal development plan.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Virgin Media fall down when it comes to arranging full time work after the graduate scheme. From my experience and from what I've seen - graduates have a tough time falling into a full time role after the scheme. There seem to be issues with headcount, which make this difficult. This seems to cause tension amongst graduates.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Considering the location (Hook), graduates and interns always tried to make an effort to meet up occasionally. However, as people live in various different places (Reading, London, Southampton, Hook)...there isn't an overly social scene amongst colleagues. Your social life depends a lot on who you live with.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Standard

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Hook = no night life

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Extra Curricular - football, half marathons, volunteer clubs etc.
