The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year at Grant Thornton. From the first day, there were a lot of inductions in place to make sure that we felt comfortable both with the people we work with but also with the work that was expected of us.
Throughout my placement year, there is a feedback process, which is used regularly to communicate with your peers about areas that need improving and areas that have completed well.
At the start of my placement, due to my lack of experience and the time of year, there wasn't as much for me to do. However, as the year progressed and I gained exposure to different areas, the workload increased.
I as given responsibility very early on in my placement year. Within the first week I was visiting and speaking to clients and completing tasks.
At university I study Accounting and Financial Management and throughout my placement year I have been reviewing financial statements and challenging assumptions, which will prove very helpful when I go back for my final year.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office is focused but friendly. Everyone is very approachable and happy to answer any questions you have.
I would say the placement is very well organised in the first 6 months, with inductions in the first couple of weeks and many training courses arranged for you. The last 6 months is a lot less structures, however I would say this was deliberately for you to be able to find your own feet and explore the role on your own.

The Culture
The social aspect of the year really enhanced my placement. We had regular events throughout the year, both subsidised by the firm and organised of our own back, and this was a really good way to get to know everyone in the office.
