The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement, and also gained invaluable experience and knowledge.
I am in a small team of four people, naturally some colleagues have been more involved with my work than others. The majority of my work has been alongside one other colleague which has been interesting and great to learn and be involved in a current project.
The placement has a very structured system which has been great to gain an insight into Savills and have the option to ask HR for guidance and help during my placement and questions regarding the graduate process. However, within my team my work was more independent with less support.
Most of the time I have constantly had work to do an been busy.
I was given responsibility with one Report that I spent the majority of my placement undertaking. As the placement progressed and I became more confident with the work I was doing, I was naturally given more responsibility. I found the work challenging enough to think and be independent but also gaining new skills an becoming familiar with new systems meant responsibility was limited at times.
The skills I have developed will be invaluable given the fact I am commencing a Real Estate Masters in a few months. My undergrad course was non-property related so I feel the four weeks at Savills have enhanced my commerical awareness and set my knowledge and skill set up in the right direction for the future. Furthermore, the placement has given me a great insight to life as a graduate at Savills, which is something that now greatly appeals as I can see the support, training and guidance is outstanding.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office is professional and formal although within smaller teams the atmosphere at times can be more relaxed and colloquial. I have enjoyed my experience in the office, colleagues have been approachable and friendly.
Outstanding. I had a busy schedule and placement diary with departmental overviews, meetings and social activities with interns and graduates. The HR team have been brilliant in expanding our outlook and understanding of the business.
When I have been working on specific jobs within my team, colleagues have given me guidance in how to use specific programmes and files. However, a an initial expectation and understanding of commercial property and relevant online webistes and programmes was expected, and no further specific training was given.
Depending on my appraisal and overall assessment during the placement, I may get fast-tracked to an assessment centre, although at this stage it is not confirmed.
The Culture
Fellow interns made an effort to organise socials after work, however there was little out of the office socialising with my team.
Central London is a very expensive place to live and work, both in terms of commuting, lucnhes and drinks.
London has an extensive nightlife although I have not combined that with work commitments.
There were limited opportunities outside of the office we were encouraged to get involved in.
