The Role
I would recommend spending part of your summer at Grant Thornton to anyone! I believe it is one of the best companies to introduce you to the world of work. If I could do another internship there next summer I definitely would. The people you work with at GT want you to enjoy your time with them, and not see work as a chore.
One of the most surprising things about Grant Thornton is their unique culture. You may read a lot of reviews about how welcoming they are, and you should believe them all! All of the interns are invited to staff events and networking sessions to make them feel like part of the team and constructive feedback is always encouraged.
You could walk up to anyone in the office, be it and associate or a manager, and ask them for advice or help if you are struggling with a piece of work. The first few days of my internship contained a lot of training, so we weren't completely in the dark when we started getting stuck in to work.
You are as busy as you want to be (within reason of course!). People are always keen to give interns some work to do. My people manager was very attentive and made sure I was always busy. My advice would be don't ask for more than you can handle at once!
From day one you get stuck in to real client work, work that will end up making an impact on the client's lives. Don't worry though, Grant Thornton has a 4eyes policy and everything gets double (sometimes triple) checked before it gets sent out. The more you are able to do independently, the more responsibility you are given.
At university, lectures are optional. Work isn't, so you have to either already have or gain a very strong work ethic if you want to be successful during your internship. This work ethic will definitely transfer over to my degree. You also gain a very analytical (nearly forensic) mindset from the internship which also transfers over nicely.
The Company
I worked in two offices throughout my internship. The London Euston office had a well defined office structure, with everyone having their own sections and people usually stayed in their own teams chatting to each other. When we moved over to Finsbury Square, we moved to a 'hot desking' situation, so it was a more homogeneous and bubblier atmosphere from then on. I really enjoyed both!
The people managers at GT didn't treat us interns like a burden and ran a very well organised internship. We did not feel forgotten about at all. GT have open calendars as well, so you can see what everyone is doing if you wanted to find something to do or if you needed some guidance.
As I have already said, the start of the internship contains a fair amount of training. Part way through the 6 weeks, we went to Bradenham Manor for 2 days in High Wycombe where we attended a 'Developing your Business Impact,' course. There, we learnt about the skill of presenting. Goal setting is also very important at GT, you set goals at the beginning, middle and review them at the end.

The Culture
My fellow interns were lovely! I couldn't have been around a bunch of nicer people. The theme seems to be the same around all the other teams I talked to around the office. I definitely recommend spending the time getting to know the other interns in your team and not treat them as competition. I hope to see them again if I get offered a graduate position at the firm!
I was in the London office, so to be honest it was a bit pricey. However, GT run a lot of free events as well and take you out for a few meals so you don't feel under pressure to spend lots of money.
As well as getting to go to Bradenham, my team organised a mini sports day in Regent's Park and a football tournament in Sheffield and all the interns were invited to go as well. The firm also organised some drinks events at night so everyone could let their hair down and network a bit.
