The Role
It was a tough start. My manager was based abroad and I had next to no training or preparation for my role. I had no team or colleague to go to for help, The placement wasn't very well organised. The job description I was given prior to starting was nothing like I actually had to do. I didn't enjoy this period of time so I managed to find a way out of this role and made the most of my remaining time which I enjoyed.
I gave this a five out of ten because I worked on various projects with various people. In the first 5 months I would say I did not feel valued due to my unusual circumstance with my manager and I was given no feedback or praise for the work I completed. after I left this role however and found my own projects to work on I felt much more valued by the people I worked with and was happy to feel of use.
I have given this five out of ten because my initial manager was very unsupportive and I did not have much of a relationship with him despite continuous effort. I would like to praise the role of the early professionals mangers who look to support interns on any concerns they may have and give appropriate guidance.
My work fluctuated a lot and it would go from one extreme to another, from being given very challenging deadlines which required early mornings and late nights to also having no work or contact whatsoever for several days at a time. I also did not like simply being 'busy' with tedious work. I didn't feel I was taught much and was quite disappointed by this.
IBM is a huge company and so its very difficult to place the impact of the work your doing on the company as a whole. I did work on many spreadsheets with sensitive data and it was important to the teams within ibm that it concerned. It is also harder to feel the importance of your work when you're only working with numbers on your laptop and not working with people in person.
A lot of my time was used helping other teams with their spreadsheets so it felt like I was helping them solve problems and develop their spreadsheet skills. I wish I had developed a lot more skills this year, it is very disappointing that there was no training or team for me to learn from. It has motivated me in my entrepreneurial ambitions and independence as it shows as an example to not rely on others.. you have to push to make it happen yourself
