The Role
I really enjoyed this placement, it was such a big learning curve with new things to learn about every day. From day 1 I was given real work that I was responsible for and which was challenging/interesting to carry out. The office I am in is a really pleasant place to work, a very supportive and collaborative environment.
My colleagues really valued both me as an individual and the benefits of having an intern join the team in general. They would always spend plenty of time explaining concepts to me and would often go beyond the question to ensure I understood the concept. They all worked really hard to provide me with meaningful work that I would benefit from undertaking.
My manager had a very good approach whereby she would constantly manage my workload but without forcing too much work onto me and still keeping me busy. We had regular meetings to catch up on my progress as well as less formal catch ups to discuss concepts I was finding difficult or wanted extra insight on.
I had a really good balance of work, my manager was aware of how much learning was required for me to understand the concepts of the job and gave me plenty of time to do this. I also had time in the day to research changes in the market or news stories applicable to our clients that I found interesting. I never felt snowed under by my workload and was constantly kept at a manageable but challenging level of business.
I was given plenty of responsibility, although this was brought about gradually. All my tasks were meaningful and value adding to the team, so in one sense I was always directly responsible for some part of the teams functioning. More difficult pieces of work were where I was eased into responsibility, beginning with shadowing and slowly carrying out the tasks individually.
The things I have learnt will 100% support me in my career in finance, learning about all the products the bank offers is a hard skill that can be transferred across the industry. The role was highly problem solving based and taking this new knowledge combined with the banks approach to customer first will definitely help me back in my degree.
The Company
The office is a great place to work. There were 8 other interns on the floor - although the atmosphere was never competitive - and 5 grads in my team who are a great point of contact for any issues. There was a summer party in my first week and plenty of volunteering events/fundraising such as charity netball.
The internship is very well structured. There is enough work to pick up from your team and surrounding ones. There is also opportunities to get involved in charity work - we had to plan a mental health awareness week complete with budget and delivery plan. We also had an intern challenge were we had to pitch to a mock client and provide the entire project from recommendations through to costing.
We had plenty of product training sessions and all the product partners were more than happy to have follow up meetings to discuss further. We also had additional online training which covered everything from Due Diligence to the EU laws surrounding banking. We were all also provided with a mentor for the duration of our internship.

Company Parties/Events
The grad scheme process is transparent from day 1, it is clear what they are looking for and what you need to achieve to get it. The timeline is also made clear. Although not every intern gets taken onto the grad scheme it is clear that if you perform well enough there will be a space for you.
The Culture
Yes the interns all live together in uni halls for the duration and go out regularly. Aside from this there is also team parties and plenty of charity events to get involved in. There is always a group of people going to lunch each day which makes a big difference to the overall enjoyment.
I was in central London so the cost of living is high. However LBG help pay towards your rent and the pay is more than adequate to cover socialising during the week. With London there are also plenty of places to eat well for less and there is no need to spend loads to enjoy yourself.
The nightlife is good - there are loads of pubs near to the office as well as clubs further out. Thursday is the main night for going out and there will always be some people in the office who join in. Near to the student halls the LBG interns live in there are lots of clubs and restaurants.
There were lots of charity events which involved teams from on the floor and we were always encouraged to get involved. There were grad and intern drinks, breakfasts with various people from management and summer parties. These were always optional with no pressure to attend if you have other commitments.
