The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at Grant Thornton! I was given lots of responsibility, and the opportunity to work on a large variety of tasks, the people in the office are very kind, patient, understanding and genuinely very nice. The office atmosphere is amazing, you could feel the team spirit and by the end of my 4th week I already felt like I was a part of the team and Grant Thornton's culture.
During my internship I was given tasks that have a real impact on the business and every job I worked on was well appreciated by my colleagues. They were helping me with anything I had difficulty with and they are always happy to teach you new things, as long as you ask questions and show you are truly interested in your work. Whenever I did something well, I was thanked and congratulated for my job well done and I was kept up to date with any progress on all the jobs I worked on until the very end of my internship. I genuinely felt that my input is valued and appreciated.
I cannot be more happy with the buddy I was assigned from the very beginning, even before I attended the interviews. She was always there, no matter how silly my questions were or what time of the day it was. She helped me with getting the internship by giving me advice before the assessment centre and helped me exceed at my tasks during the 6 weeks. She always had time for me and was regularly making sure that I was doing fine with my work. I learnt a lot from her and I can't express how thankful I am. The culture at Grant Thornton is very open and everybody is approachable from an intern to a partner. They are all very kind and easy to talk to.
I was quite busy during my internship and I loved that! I had just enough work to do every day and I cannot think of a time when I was bored. Most of the time I was not even asking people for work, instead they were all coming to me. This made me feel that people were happy with my performance on all previous assignments I had worked on for them and that way I was able to build my confidence in the workplace. My workload was enough to keep me going just until I got some more pieces of work. Overall, I was happy with the amount of work I was assigned as I learnt a lot of different things about different procedures.
I am very pleased with all the responsibility I was given. I had a large variety of different types of work assigned to me, and it gave me a great perspective of what an everyday job would look like. The responsibility I was given helped me learn a great deal about the technicalities of the job and it made me feel more confident in my abilities once I was able to complete a project all by myself. Whenever I found something difficult that I could not find the solution to myself, I was asking my team members and they were all very helpful and willing to push you forward.
Everything I learnt during my internship will help me in some way during my lifetime. I felt I was thinking in a different way just after 2 or 3 weeks on the job and the steep learning curve from then on only motivated me to look for other things I still do not know. I also developed my communication, time-management and presentation skills, which will definitely help me in my subsequent studies and beyond. I developed my confidence and built my professional network, both of which are invaluable and will drive me forward in life.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was very friendly but also professional - just the right balance to motivate you to work hard. Every person I have spoken to was really kind and friendly. Whenever you get tired and need a break, there is always someone there that you can talk to. The culture of the firm is encouraging people to share ideas and responsibility and the atmosphere is not too rigid, you start feeling as if you are already a part of the team relatively quickly and this is part of the reason why I would love to come back to work at Grant Thornton full-time.
Very well organised, I was really happy with the set up. All the interns travelled to London twice and everything was readily organised for us, we did not have to worry about anything. We had regular meetings with the managers and were kept up to date with what is next and what is required of us.
I could have received a bit more technical theoretical training at the beginning of the internship, but overall I learnt a lot more from doing things in practice than what I would have learnt from more theoretical training sessions. Even though I don't have an accounting background I was able to get to grips with everything quite quickly, and according to the feedback I received, I managed to excel at my internship.

As already mentioned, I would love to come back and work at Grant Thornton full-time. I loved my time there and I enjoyed every minute of my internship. I was given lots of responsibility and a large variety of different types of work, so that I was able to see what a full-time role would involve. The professional exams that Grant Thornton sponsors you to take are just one more benefit to working there, there are good development opportunities within the firm and its culture is like no other.
The Culture
The other interns and I bonded from the very first day and we became close friends over the course of the internship. The atmosphere at the office was social and relaxed, which makes you look forward to coming to work every day.
I have been living in Glasgow for almost 4 years now and I am pretty much used to the cost of living already, but for someone coming in from other places, it might seem that the food is not very cheap, the rents are a bit expensive, too, but it depends on people's preferences and previous lifestyle. In comparison to other Scottish towns, Glasgow's cost of living is pretty much the same, in my opinion. Moreover, Scottish people are very kind and friendly in general.
The nightlife is great in Glasgow, there are many different events you can attend and activities to enjoy, there is always something going on in Glasgow, especially in the evenings. Glasgow is full of art and music and you can meet many talented people on its streets. Overall, you would not be bored in this town.
There are many opportunities to network and meet new people outside of work, but still organised by the company.
