The Role
The work was enjoyable and I felt as though I was able to integrate well with my colleagues. Visiting client sights was interesting, especially liasing with high up people at the client company. This was the part I most enjoyed, but I also got the opportunity to attend numerous social events and meals, where I was able to get to know many different people from my office.
This is something that may depend who you're working with. Personally, I felt valued and like I was given testing work, however some interns mentioned receiving what felt like the work nobody else wanted to do. Sometime's the work was testing and I received difficult work that would normally be done by a first or second year grad. I feel I developed a good working relationship with all my colleagues without a doubt.
All interns were allocated a buddy who we could mention any problems to and ask any questions. His role was to integrate you into the office and with people around you. I also had a counsellor who I was able to approach with any more pressing concerns. Both your counsellor and buddy are based in your local office and have full knowledge of the internship process. There is also counsellors above him within the central student recruitment service.
This varied day to day. Some days were hugely busy and some days it'd be a case of scraping the barrel to find work whilst you wait for the client to respond with the information you need. That, however, is the nature of audit work and as an intern you don't have a portfolio of clients from which you can find other work from in those lulls.
I felt as though I was given more responsibility than I expected. The work given seemed like it was valuable to the firm and I was allowed to speak to clients alone, something which I didn't expect, as I imagined another colleague would be present. The only problem was not being allowed onto some of the software the firm uses.
I will be doing an audit module next year, so I await to see if it helps with that, however it will definitely be helpful if I am successful in recieving a job offer from the firm. The work allowed me to see where what I study at uni fits in in the real life working world, however audit is different to accounting and finance studies.
The Company
The office atmosphere tended to depend on how busy it was, particularly as you spend a bulk of the time at client sights. It did feel like a friendly atmosphere and I felt at ease in fitting in. We had events like the office summer party which saw the full office out around town until 4 in the morning. Everyone in the office got along well and I enjoyed getting to know people.
The first 2 days consisted of a an induction with all other interns, followed by an office induction the second day. There was also an I webinar induction, ensuring you knew how to use everything that was required. I was then made aware of what I'd be working on, who with and where well in advance, enabling me to plan. It was also easy to arrange other things, such as partner shadows or work in other service lines, all you had to do was email the resource coordinator.
We were given numerous online training exercises to complete, but also learnt a lot on the job, which will hopefully stand me in good stead for the future. Everyone in my office was willing to take time out to invest in spending time with me and discussing anything from career aspirations to office events. I felt valued at EY and like everyone was prepared to help me out and teach me how to do things I didn't understand.

I would love to receive a job offer as a result of this internship and see no better place to complete a grad job and my professional qualifications. I hope to find out in the next couple of weeks that I've been successful.
The Culture
Definitely! We went for dinner numerous times, along with other members of the office and also kept in touch with other interns on skype for business. There was also a final event organized at the end of the internship were all interns across various offices met up to have a few drinks and catch up with each other.
I was able to live at home in Hull, but it's also cheap to rent in Hull. Properties are available around £65 including bills and with the cost of living also being cheap, it's easy to save money. Drinks are around £2 a pint and food also comes cheap.
The nightlife is good, with drinks being cheap and a number of night clubs to suit different tastes. There's also a number of bars, such as the rooftop bar on an art gallery where we held our office summer party. The only issue is that on some nights it can be a bit quiet in the clubs, but that goes for most cities.
There were plenty! Within my first week I'd been invited to go watch horse racing, play football, play squash, go out for food and go for drinks. The invitations to events continued throughout and it was easy to get involved in. Simply accept the invitation in your calendar and turn up!
