The Role
I've been put on a new project where most of the works relating to my course is dwindling down, so there's not as much work as i'd want, but overall the placement taught me a few things and filled some gaps in my knowledge as well as give me more experience in engineer-designer relations as well as communication with clients
It started off with me being tasked with the little jobs, but as i stayed there longer and started to show my ability, i was trusted with more delicate work and eventually took on more responsibility within the project like making trackers for sub contractors and setting up and taking meeting with client representatives.
i was guided every step of the way and was always told to ask questions wherever i was stuck. I was also given a buddy who helped me navigate in the first few weeks till i found my foot. Everyone in the office was also nice and i got bought lunch most days. the section manager was also sitting close to me so he also gave me insight when needed
As the project was already heading to an end, most days weren't very busy in the beginning as i didnt have much to do. But as i gradually gained trust and started being given more tasking responsibilities, i was getting busier and was out on site more, which makes time fly faster than you'd expect.
It started off with not much responsibility and i was mostly doing the menial works like printing safety signs and laminating documents and using powerpoint. But as time went on, i was tasked with trackers and using AutoCAD and making redline drawings. Then i moved on to going on site inspections with clients and engineers and doing as built surveys
The skills i had coming in to the project were improved like my use of AutoCAD and microsoft office, but i also filled gaps in my knowledge when it came to filling and use of official paperwork and proper channels for logging queries etc, as well as getting new training for completing risk assessments and method statements as well as track safety awareness and i feel that althogh this wont necessarily help me in university degree, it definitely puts me ahead when i get in the industry
The Company
The office atmosphere as well as that on site with the labourers was very nice with good jokes around and feeling as part of the family. There were lots of good informative posters as well as fruits supplied by the company every week which made for happier coworkers and a more enjoyable office. Everyone was always wanting to help or make sure you were enjoying your stay which was very good
The placement was set up well as im a sponsored student who has been working for the company for 3 years ow. there was communication throughout my university year leading into the summer placement and from the line manager taking me on. There was also a good starting day with getting my ID and company log in details to learning how to file expenses and other things. The company has an intranet with all the information you might need We were also allocated tasks to complete which ensured we spoke to higher ups and got us networking
Almost everything the company does is leading up to chartership by the ICE which entails personal growth and helps you progress in the company. They also offer lots of learning oppurtunities and courses on the intranet which you can complete online whenever you can and helps mould your chartership status as well as your personal confidence to carry on with allocated tasks
