The Role
This placement was very enjoyable, most likely more so than the one I did last year. There was a lot to enjoy as I found that the role was clearly a lot more suited to my personality type in terms of what it demanded. It was challenging and most definitely allowed me to do some developing of the skills I possess.
I was definitely not feeling undervalued my any of my colleagues in the slightest. They did not treat me like a stereotypical intern but rather as part of the team. They used me to their advantage in terms of my skills rather than having me do anything that was pointless. This meant that I was of value and offered value in return.
I was given a very appropriate amount of support and guidance by my Line Manager. It was enough to assist me when needed and yet not too much that I felt I was being spoon fed. Being helped too much would not have been beneficial for either of us. Therefore my Line Manager would ask me if I needed support with anything and made me feel comfortable enough to ask if needed.
Fairly busy through out the most of it. I started off with some research and of course mandatory training to get into the swing of things. From then on I have been given tasks to keep me busy for the rest of the time. Never has something dragged on for weeks and so my tasks were always updated and refreshed when needed.
A fair amount of responsibility was given to me during my placement. Initially I was more supervised in the sense that my work and packs would be quickly reviewed before being circulated. Following this I was given the responsibility to do the work and send it out and meet my own deadline with out as much supervision. Therefore I had more responsibility over myself and my work.
From the get go we decided to look at how this internship could teach me skills beyond this sub area of the bank. A main weakness of mine is Time Management when I am at University and so this became a focus. As I was given various tasks at any one time and sometimes given some urgent work. Resulting in juggling and prioritising all part of time management.
The Company
The atmosphere was a good working environment. It varies in business depending on if people are away, working from home or in a different office. I had a good working space to get things done, it was never too loud but could sometimes be fairly silent. There could have been more interaction generally but otherwise it was a nice atmosphere.
There was no start to end plan for what I would be doing through out the internship but it was by no means disorganised. The area meant that things in the project were regularly changing and so allowed for me to be a part of a real life project to get real experience of how it could be. Tasks were still thought out before given to me and had a clear goal and purpose rather than just because things had to be done.
I was given actions to take on that were for my personal training and development. I was offered and took it upon myself to shadow some people to help with training. Also the initiation of my internship included research on my behalf, however my resources included people in the office who would take their time out to talk to me. So I was given what I could have been offered generally.
Quite appealing. After my first placement I really admires the worth ethic of Lloyds. The guideline were truly followed and implemented rather than just being for show which I found to be impressive. Lloyds offer a lot of benefits to their employees and it does not go unnoticed when you work hard. The opportunities are endless and so future employment seems very appealing to m.
The Culture
We all interacted over a Facebook Messenger group, realising there was lot more of us based here than assumed was great. As expected people generally had smaller friendship group based on who they lived with, worked with or who they already knew. This still allowed for a good social life between the whole group.
Accommodation was supplied to us by the scheme which was extremely useful. The prices of food I felt were no different to my usual home cities and generally compared to places in England. This meant that the price of living for us generally was not too expensive and definitely manageable since the accommodation with bills was paid for.
The night life was surprising good. Despite being the summer when the majority of students have returned home the clubs and bars were still very much lively even prior to the Fringe starting. There is definitely a massive variation and choice for people with bars and clubs. I would not say it is the best that I have been to, but also not the worst.
With in my team there were definitely the more outgoing and social group that were more than happy to try to organise events. There were various out of the office events for me to get involved in. This included a team meeting followed by drinks. There was a birthday outing with a gin distillery tour. Furthermore there have been meals and fringe events to visit with the team.
