The Role
The job was enjoyable mainly because I got on very well with my fellow interns and other individuals working in the office. However, the work could often get repetitive or tedious and the amount of work we were set would very a lot over the internship meaning that at some points I found myself with nothing to do.
It was very easy to get along with my fellow colleagues meaning that I found it easy to interact with them and ask any questions. However, due to my lack of knowledge in the subject I sometimes felt left out as they would not give me any work even when I asked. This meant that I didn't feel as valued as I could have because they would not find work for me to do.
I often felt supported by the individuals in charge of me as they would often catch up with me and make sure that I had managed to do the tasks that I set out to do at the start of my internship. My counselor was fantastic at keeping up to date with my progress and making sure I had completed a minimum number of things over the internship.
This was one of the biggest problems of the internship. The amount of work I had to do fluctuated massively over the span of the 6 weeks. Some days I found myself with several individuals asking me to help them with tasks which I struggled with as it isn't possible to do an infinite number of jobs in a finite day. Other days I literally had nothing to do and even when I asked no one would give me any work to do.
There was a good amount of responsibility entrusted upon me as some of the work I was producing would end up on the final canvas for the project.
The skills I have learnt will definitely help me with my future jobs as I have learnt many things.
The Company
The general atmosphere of the office was good because everyone was very nice and friendly which meant that there was a positive feeling in the office. It was also a very hard working atmosphere which meant that it was easy to focus on your work and not get distracted by other conversations occurring around you. However, there was a bit of hostility in the office if a conversation went on for too long because other individuals would assume that it means you are not working enough. But apart from that the atmosphere was generally very positive amongst the individuals in the office. There were the odd issues I found but these were not enough to detract from the fact that most people got on very well and this made working more productive.
The internship was well organized. This is because at every point during the 6 weeks we were put on a specific project. Therefore we always knew what group we were working with and who to ask for help or more work. Our calendars and email were constantly updated with the latest changes meaning that everyday we knew exactly what to do or if we didn't then we knew who to ask for help or work. This meant that at no point during the internship I felt lost with regards to what I was supposed to do. The direction was always clear and the support was always there meaning that I could focus my attention on getting the most out of the time that I was at the office.
The main thing was that the company gave me a breadth of experience which I have found very useful. For example, I was allowed to travel with other colleagues to a client site and on a separate occasion I was able to shadow a partner of the firm. These situations require effort and time on behalf of the company but they carried them out so that I could gain a range of experience. However, this was the full extent of the investment of the company. There were no training sessions or events for me to better understand the company and the service line I was working in
Future employment prospects are good within the company. This is due to the fact that the conversion rate of intern to graduate is high and therefore I am likely to get an offer. Working at a regional office means that career progression is clear and attainable. This has acted as an incentive for me to consider joining the company by taking the graduate scheme. The company is also very flexible with regards to switching service line or location, this has also increased the likelihood of me joining the company on a permanent basis as I will be able to have more options with respect to what I wish my career to be in future.
The Culture
I got on very well with my colleagues (especially the other interns) on a personal level. This meant that we were comfortable going on social events together and we have done this on several occasions. However, due to many interns including myself having to commute from far away places, the social events were limited by the fact that many people were often not able to attend. This is a minor issue as it can be rectified easily.
I lived at home during my internship meaning that this question does not really apply to me. The city I interned in was interesting and but relatively expensive. Despite this it was still much cheaper than London which meant that I saved a lot of money on food and drinks. I feel like I am not that able to answer this question in full as I did not do enough over the 6 weeks to have an answer.
Similar to the previous question I feel like I did not do enough with respect to this question to be able to answer it in full. This is due to the fact that I had to commute to work everyday meaning that it was often difficult to be able to enjoy the cities nightlife because I lived so far away. If I had lived in the city I was working then I would have been able to go out more and but my travel situation restricted me very often and in the end I only went out once or twice. Therefore I am not fully able to answer this question.
There were a few opportunities e.g. football but because I had such a long travel home I was not able to enjoy these fully and therefore I am not best placed to answer this question.
