    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have enjoyed the placement, the work has been challenging, but still achievable and I have been given work throughout that I have took leadership of, so it has made me feel part of the team and a real employee. The team have been great, they are all friendly and approachable and there if I need them or have any questions. The office environment was great and a good place to work, it felt welcoming and I was encouraged to pursue the areas I was interested in.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by colleges, they made me part of the team instantly and accepted me into the team. They are supportive and there if I needed any help and they also came to me for help at times, which made me feel valued. I was invited to team events and socials, such as lunches and mini golf. They also organised a birthday lunch for me which was lovely.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • All members of the team were there to support me, they all took time to show me what they do in their role. My line manager was very helpful and supportive, setting up tasks and 121s for me to ensure I got the most out of my experience. The management team gave me guidance when I need it and if I had any issues or needed help with work, they were there and could help me if it was needed.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was quite busy as I was given a range of different tasks. I had one long term project which I worked on for most of my placement, but whilst completing this I also had some smaller tasks that I was given. This gave me a good spread of work and meant I was busy at times and had other stuff to fill gaps in my time that I had. I wasn't overly busy, but at times I had quite a few things to do depending on deadlines.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a suitable amount of responsibility. I wasn't given too much that I felt I could not control it , but was given enough to be valued by the team and felt like a real employee and part of them team. I had projects which I lead and I was responsible for and other team members relied on me to get these complete. There were other projects that was not my responsibility, but I did help my team to complete work in these.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have gained and improved a lot of skills. Some of which will help me with my studies, such as my time management and organisation skills. Other skills will help me in the work environment and in my future career, such as my communications skills and team work skills. I feel that I already had a lot of the skills in place, but this internship put them to the test and helped improve them.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It had a good atmosphere. Everyone was welcoming and friendly so it was easy to fit in and a nice place to work everyday. Everyone was helpful and chatty, whilst still being professional. Although at times it was quiet due to agile working, there was always someone there if you needed anything. Everyone seemed happy in the workplace and it was a safe place to be and talk openly.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. My line manager had set up an initial 2 week timetable for me, with various 121 meetings and introduction talks to help me learn as much about the business as possible and this was very helpful. My manager had a clear idea of what he wanted me to do and get out of the internship. There was also some events organised throughout the internship which were also useful.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm and my team invested in me a lot, they all took some of their time to meet with me and explain more about their role and also were there for me whenever I needed any help. My line manager was helpful and wanted me to develop myself and get as much out of the internship and to get the best idea of what I wanted in a future career as possible. The manager and team encouraged me to develop and pursue any other areas of the bank that I was interested in and were willing to help me get in contact with the relevant areas of the bank.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing and I would strongly consider working for the organisation. My time with the organisation has been great, the team, work ethic and work values are great and make it a great place to work and somewhere I would be proud to work. The charity and voluntary aspect of the organisation also make it appealing. They are encouraging and want people to develop and progress which is something that is important to me. The only thing I am not so keen on is moving a lot between different locations.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was okay, but personally I didn't really feel that there was. Due to the large number if interns in London and the fact that there wasn't really an initial social event where you could meet and get to know everyone it made it difficult to integrate with everyone. I know that some people were social and would go out but not everyone. I was social with my flatmates and charity team which was good so we did a few things together but it would have been nice to have a wider social group.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of my accommodation was paid for by the organisation which was good, this reduced my weekly costs. I know it was quite pricey, around £160 a week, due to it being in central London. The other costs such as food, transport and other activities was more expensive than what I was used to back home, this meant that I had to budget my money.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I did not really experience the nightlife due to not really integrating with the other interns, although I know some of them did go out. I didn't like to go out at night alone as I didn't feel safe so I didn't experience much of it then. Also as we were not allowed guests overnight, I mostly did day activities so I am not really sure what the nightlife is like. I have heard from other people that it quite expensive.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was, but only to an extent. My work team got me involved in some outside activities, such as mini golf which was good. There were some events, both social and charity based that were organised by interns, but they weren't massively promoted. There are a lot of places to go and things to do in London which is great, but this is dependent on costs and time. Also not being from London made it a bit more confusing and difficult to explore and find opportunities.
