The Role
I very much enjoyed my internship at Nomura as it is a great place to work and learn as an intern. The people at Nomura were both extremely welcoming and helpful.
I felt very valued during my internship. At the beginning of my internship I was given my own project to work on and as the weeks progress I became more and more relied upon to deliver the aims of this project. My ideas and suggestions were considered carefully and often implemented and taken on-board.
The mentor and buddy system is very good at providing any incoming interns with support. The buddy acts as your first point of contact for any questions and is usually a graduate.
At the beginning of my internship I was given an individual project and a set of objectives to achieve by the end of my summer internship. My project generally kept me quite busy and there are a number of opportunities to shadow other areas in the bank and not just within Technology. There are also a number of optional online training modules available to do during any downtime.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility as I was responsible for my own project. I was trusted to explore different ways to implement this project and my suggestions were frequently taken on-board and implemented. My project also had a number of applications and would genuinely add value to Nomura.
I greatly developed soft skills such as communication, analysis and leadership ability. I also developed and learned a number of new technical skills utilising a number of different software I had no previous experience with.
The Company
My team was very friendly and helpful and the general atmosphere/working environment is pretty relaxed. There are regular Thursday evening drinks on the Terrace which many of the team attended.
The internship was very well set up in my opinion. The workload was challenging but manageable and there were a number of events which HR set up to improve our soft skills (e.g. presentation skills workshops). The internship also provided a number of opportunities to shadow and network with other areas within the bank.
There is an online catalogue/library with a number of training modules on various topics within finance. However, these modules are entirely optional. HR did set up a number of workshops to improve skills such as communication and teamwork.

At the end of the internship, there is the opportunity to be offered the graduate role provided your performance during your internship has been satisfactory. I believe there are opportunities to switch teams/roles if offered the graduate role. The graduate role typically lasts around 2-3 years.
The Culture
Yes, usually interns tended to have lunch together at the canteen. A number of interns would stay for Thursday drinks on the Terrace and there were a number of events organised throughout my internship.
My internship was based in London and generally the cost of living in London is very expensive. However, I attend university in London so I was already used to it. The office is in the centre of London and very convenient and there are a huge number of different options for lunch. There are a number of tube stations nearby and so commuting to the office was fairly easy.
London is one of the best cities for nightlife as there is so much to do, downside is that it can be very expensive. As the office is near the centre of London, there are a number of different bars and pubs nearby that are only a few minutes walk which is very convenient for getting drinks after work.
Yes, HR organised a number of events for team-building between the interns. There was also the intern charity challenge to fund raise for Nomura's partnered charity. I also believe employees can take up to two days each year dedicated to a charity event.
