The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with Grant Thornton. I was given proper work straight away meaning I felt that I was a valued member of the team. There were also lots of extra activities to get involved with outside of work, especially socials with both interns as well as with more senior colleagues.
I felt really valued by all of my colleagues that I worked with. On all the jobs I worked on I was given a lot of sampling and testing to complete which was eventually put into the full audit report which was given to the clients. As such I felt valued as all of the work I was doing was important.
I was given a lot of support throughout my internship. I firstly had a people manger who I didn't work with but I could go to with any questions or queries I had. Then on each job I worked on I had an in charge who was on site with me who I could ask if I had any questions about the work and then a manager of the job who could also assist me when he came out to the site.
From the first day I was very busy. There was always work to be done, especially when on the clients site. This was good in my opinion though as it allowed me to learn as much as possible. Towards the end of the placement the amount of the work given to us decreased slightly and this allowed me to complete the extra projects and presentation to be done for the end of the internship.
I was surprised by the amount of responsibility that was given to me throughout my internship. All the work I completed on site was put towards the audit report which was the submitted to the clients. Following that I spent time working on and checking draft accounts, with my adjustments also sent to the client, as such all the work I was doing was representing the firm.
I gained and developed so many skills which will assist in my degree and my future career. Firstly I greatly increased my understanding of audit and what is required for the audit process. As well as this I also really improved my teamwork and leadership abilities. Finally I spent a lot of time working with the client, so my confidence in speaking to clients also improved.
The Company
The placement was overall well organised. My first day was an induction where I spent time learning about the firm and what happens day to day for an employee. At this point we could also see what jobs we were booked on and what dates I was working on them for which allowed me to plan my travel.
There were quite a few online modules to be completed throughout the internship, such as one on fraud and corruption. As well as this, the interns and I completed a one day confidence in presenting module put on by Grant Thornton which greatly improved my presentation skills. Finally, we also learnt a lot about audit from the work we did for our clients.
The Culture
Yes, there was a very good social scene. There were 3 socials for the interns throughout the internship where we could meet other interns, as well as more senior colleagues. As well as this my team and I went out for drinks for clients which allowed me to network. Finally, there were also end of the month drinks for the department which allowed me to meet more people in the company.
My internship was in central London as such living and socialising was more expensive than what it would be in other areas. However, being in London I felt that I was working right in the centre of the firm and I believe this allowed me to get the best experience from the internship.
