The Role
Really enjoyed it, really nice and friendly working atmosphere - with good oppurtunites to get involved with the business if you want to. Was also given responsibility as I seeked it out, but there was always someone to support if I had any queries or issues with the task I was given.
Was treated profesionally like a full time employee - not like a kid. There was no differentiation between myself and other employees - was a full time amember of the team and was expected to help out and work with them as a full time employee would. Although I was given some of the more mundane tasks to complete, they had to be completed all the same.
So many points of contact, with lots of people who will help and offer feedback throughout the placement. Graduate buddy system allows you to make contact with people on the graduate scheme and gain their insight on the company as well. In summary though, anyone is available to offer guidance even if you may not directly work with them.
It varied - some days busy, some days were very quiet, although this was partly due to problems resulting in project implementation being delayed. I would have preferred to have my own projects to sink my teeth into that I could manage from end to end, as other placement students had, but my role was more of a day to day role.
The right balance - although I never really felt out of my depth, and I could have been pushed further. However in the area I was in I would have required large amounts of training which would have taken a large proportion of the time on my placement, so it wasn't quite so feasible.
Huge development in teamworking, communications, presentation, networking as well as time and resource management. I learnt about delivery plans and how sometimes I can take on more than I can deal with, improving my understanding of capacity. In the future I am always going to carry out a delivery plan to ensure tasks are completed with contingency.
The Company
Very friendly and quite relaxed. I was able to go up to and chat to pretty much anyone and never felt like I was 'that annoying intern'. Members of other teams were happy to work with me and were also always happy to allow me to shadow them in their daily activities.
The whole scheme is organised very well. Everyone has a number of different contacts who regularly check up on how you are doing and how you've settled in at the company. Not only this, but several oppurtunites are made to interns to allow site visits to various industrial sites including the gas terminals as well as power stations and the distribution centre.
The company were very supportive and actively encouraged us to go on days out (on expenses) with the engineer as well as to industrial sites as I mentioned above. They also organised team building days as well as really professional presentation training which improved my presentation skills hugely.

Very appealing. The process of graduate selection is currently ongoing - there is a final presentation which we all give in the final week to the graduate talent board and our managers. This was an oppurtunity to gain valuable feedback from our peers as well as the managers - some of which who have plenty experience to share.
The Culture
Really good social scene. As accomodation was provided at Royal Holloway - all the interns are based in one place so resulted in some solid friendships building up between the groups. There are quite a few pubs around (although clubs may be lacking unless you're willing to travel a bit further afield) which was welcome after work!
As to be expected on the outskirts of London - its obviously going to be quite expensive, however as a result of accomodation being provided, this was largely offset. I would have been unable to afford the internship without accomodation being provided - so was a very good perk for the summer.
Not great - as I said earlier there are a lack of clubs in Egham/Staines, however there are some options slightly further afield in Windsor, Putney and Clapham - although theres the cost of getting a taxi back. However there are a few restaurants and pubs around in Egham, some of which are actually okay. There is a big lacking in good takeaway options however.
Yes - there were lots of sports clubs and other social gatherings organised in not only my department but throughout the company. Through the charity challenge as well there were other events going on - one group organised a 5 a side tournament with interns and centrica employees at royal holloway as well as the standard football games that happened throughout the week.
