The Role
Coming from a scientific background I really enjoyed the opportunity to work amongst a wider mix of people whilst interning. I think the exposure to a real, working business environment was really useful for me when thinking where I might want to end up after University.
Even though on occasions whilst working on day to day tasks I felt like I wasn't necessarily utilising the skills I have from my degree, I still always felt like the effort I put into getting them done alongside the larger projects was appreciated by my colleagues. The chance to add something to the department with the technical individual project was definitely seen as a valuable use of time.
Even when my colleagues in my department couldn't really help me with the technical challenges of my individual project I was fortunate to be assigned a mentor who was very supportive and always on hand to help me step-by-step. Being in the Academy amongst a range of technical trainers meant that if needs be, there was always someone to ask if I was stuck.
With the range of tasks including a group project across different locations, a technical individual project as well as day to day admin tasks to try and manage I always had work to get on with. Days were usually pretty full on but I enjoyed being kept busy and the mixture of different types of work kept it from feeling too much.
Managing the intern group project amongst ourselves to ensure we delivered a good final idea at the end and utilised the budget was a big responsibility. I felt like from the start of the internship I was quickly trusted to carry out important tasks and take responsibility for managing my time effectively.
Being an intern within the Academy at FDM exposed me to a lot of information about the different training programs. During my time there I sat in on week long courses in both SQL and Excel+VBA. SQL was new to me and so I have been fortunate to develop a skill which I otherwise wouldn't have had the exposure to. Getting the chance to further my Excel skills and get more in depth with my understanding of VBA will be very useful in whatever I do from now on. As part of the group project I furthered my knowledge of using Python but in a different setting to my degree which will no doubt be useful in the future also.
The Company
Really friendly, everyone willing to help and easy to have a laugh with colleagues.
Group and indvidual project briefs were well organised and interesting
Gave me the opportunity to just ask if I thought I would benefit from sitting in any of the training courses.
Large range of graduate opportunities to look into
The Culture
8 interns in the London office meant it was easy to have similar people to talk to
Didn't really get the opportunity to explore this
