The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with FDM.
My colleagues were very engaging and helpful, and I feel that as the internship progressed and they got to know me as an individual, they valued me more and more.
I felt sufficiently supported throughout my internship, and I felt comfortable enough to approach people with any questions that I had. My manager scheduled regular meetings with me to catch up on my progress and to assign me new tasks. These meetings provided an on-going dialogue between us. FDM run a mentoring scheme throughout the organisation and within my first few days, I was matched with a mentor and introduced to them. I met with my mentor numerous times throughout the programme and she helped me form goals and lay out plans to achieve my goals. My mentor was from a different department, so it was also a great way for me to hear about a different element of the organisation.
It took a few days for me to develop a portfolio of tasks to work on. I was given the first few days to settle in, get to know everybody and the way things operate in my team. I was content with my daily workload, and I never felt like I had too much to handle or I was bored.
From the outset, the other Interns and I were assigned a group-project which involved developing an activity for FDM to use in its promotion. We were given a significant budget to work with and a lot of scope for creativity. I feel like I was given responsibility from day one for this reason, and as my manager increasingly trusted me with tasks of growing significance.
The skills I have gained during my internship have made me feel a lot more equipped and ready to enter the working world after my time at university. In my opinion, the most transferable skills to my degree studies are time management and general organisational skills.
The Company
The people were hard working but so friendly.
The internship was well structured and provided enough scope for me to choose what things in particular I would like to work on more or less.
FDM are keen to keep in contact and have discussed future employment prospects with me. After having worked in this company for eight weeks, future employment prospects are very appealing.
The Culture
The other intern in my office and I got on really well.
I was able to stay at home during my internship which really helped me out cost-wise. Glasgow also has a great social scene, and is generally very good value for money.
The nightlife is good.
Definitely.
