The Role
Overall, the internship was an enjoyable experience. Although there were times when I had very little work to do, the other interns were very pleasant which made it an enjoyable experience.
Any work I did I was made to feel valued and as if it was a great help to them team however, sometimes the team were really busy and didn't have time to explain any new work to me so I was left with not a lot to do.
My engagement contacts were all really good at taking time to explain any work to me and answer any questions.
Some days I was very busy and did a solid 7.5 hours work however other days I had very little to do which made the day go so slowly.
All the work I was given I was left to do independently by using previous year examples as a template then it got checked over at the very end so I would say this was a lot of responsibility.
The internship has helped with my degree to some extent as I study accountancy.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was good as it was fairly relaxed and quite chatty. Most people were really helpful as well if I ever had any questions.
The internship was fairly well organized however my department took on 4 interns which I felt was too many when trying to allocate work and explain as it took up a lot of people's time who had a job to be doing. We were also given a checklist of tasks to complete during our internship but a lot of these weren't specific to my department so were a bit irrelevant. Often there was little work for us all to do so we ended up spending a lot of time doing web based learning activities rather than add value to the company.
The company took me on for 11 weeks so this is a lot of time for them to invest in an intern. However I don't feel like they made the best use out of the interns generally as there were a lot of small simple tasks we could have done to give us something to do however as these would take a while to explain it was quicker for the staff to do it themselves.
Company Parties/Events
I would still be interested in getting a job at EY because as a member of staff we would clearly be given more work and responsibility, particularly as we are training in ICAS. The career prospects within the firm are also strong with guaranteed promotion after 3 years once CA qualified. The exposure to well known clients is also a perk of the job.
The Culture
We were in a group of 18 interns who were all very sociable. We would tend to go for lunch in a group and after work drinks on Friday. We also have a few socials in the office with all other staff which was good fun.
I was staying at my family home whilst doing the internship so I didn't have living costs as such but there are plenty well priced bars and restaurants around the office.
The nightlife in Edinburgh is good and not to expensive. There are a variety of clubs and bars near the office which are good to go to after work on a Friday. Not to mention the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which runs throughout August leads to many pop up bars etc round about.
There weren't many opportunities for us to get involved except pushing the Friday afternoon's drinks trolley however I feel as a graduate this would be different!
