The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at EY. It was an invaluable insight into the corporate world of work as well as the professional financial services industry in general. I came in with very little experience but I was guided through valiantly which made the transition from university and part time working much easier.
I did feel very valued by my colleagues. The team was not very large but they were full of spirit. This made it easy to quickly feel at home and I was reassured frequently by them that the work I completed for them was a big and worthy contribution to them.
I was given a lot of support and guidance by my assigned counsellor and the other managers. I never felt like I could not ask them a question or clarify the task in hand on a professional level. Equally on a personal lever, they always checked I was enjoying myself and comfortable.
I was not terribly busy to the extent that I could not handle the pressure or volume of work I was given. There was no occasion where I was made to stay late in the office or likewise, however, I also had plenty to be getting on with. Sometimes I did have down time but I had my project to fill that in.
I was given a good amount of responsibility considering I was there for six weeks only. I was trusted to visit clients where I was representing the brand, and that is something that cannot be altered like a piece of work. The work I completed was also sent out to clients.
The skills I have developed and training I have received I do not feel I could have gained anywhere else especially while at university. Studying alongside my degree I could not have gained experience in a corporate environment and undertaken even simple office duties.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was always cheery and chatty. Everyone was friendly, asking if you needed a drink or a helping hand. We were always planning social events which proves everyone got on outside of the office too and this really helped our bond. Any stress would be quickly relieved.
The internship could have been organised better. On the first day in the office I was told I would have access to all the software. However, I did not get the software I needed to complete day to day work until 3 weeks (halfway) through my internship. This made it difficult for colleagues to delegate work to me as I physically couldn't do it.
In terms of personal training and development, I had to complete numerous web based learning. There were also weekly lunch and learn sessions each on a different and useful topic regarding any problems or emotions you may be feeling while at work. They also did not hesitate to take me to meeting with them to gain hands on experience.

Company Parties/Events
I would really love to work here at EY and particularly in this location. By completing the internship I now know the team I will be working with as well as being familiar with the building and rules to abide by. I can see there are a lot of career opportunities available from my career counselling sessions.
The Culture
Yes there was a very good social scene amongst both my fellow placement students and my colleagues. They would always suggest drinks and food either after work or during lunch that I would definitely suggest taking part in. I also know many of us joined sports socials too which were both competitive and fun.
I am from the north east anyway, so I was used to the prices of living and socialising in this area. It is very cheap and I think most importantly the range of transport around the city and that used for is very affordable compared to the salary EY pay.
Again, Newcastle is known for it's nightlife. The office is located in the heart of the city centre so there is plenty available without having to explore unknown areas that you aren't familiar with. There are busy clubs and bars open late every night of the week, so something for everyone.
Yes there were many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. EY have lots of different diversity and inclusion networks you can join, as well as charity fundraisers for local and there own charity. For example you can join the EY womens network. There are sports teams too or just general socialising.
